BENJAMIN (BENNY) COLLIN (DANISH/AMERICAN. 1896-1974)Abstract #44. Circa 1950. Signed Benny Collin. Oil on Board. Measuring 54 by 48 in. (Cond: retouched, cleaned) cf. Benjamin (Benny) Collin (1896 -1979), born Benjamin Cohen, he was a Danish émigré who came to the U.S. fleeing Nazi persecution during the war. Upon arriving in the United States, he pursued a career in art working on altarpieces for churches in the northeast by day and geometric abstractions based on the “Golden Spiral” by night. Informed by the strong tradition of European abstraction, he created many colorful acrylic-washes on canvas, found materials and paper with compositions based on a complex mathematical formula that yielded rhythmic, vibrant, kaleidoscopic images evoking the repetition of musical scores such as those of Bach and Mozart.
