GEOFFREY HOLDER FOREST LANDSCAPE WC PAINTING New York, Spain1930-2014Impressionist depiction of a man dressed in white in the middle of a large, dense forest. Holder was a renaissance man, actor, dancer, and painter winning a Tony in 1975 for directing and costuming for "The Wiz." As a child, Holder was widely self taught when it came to painting, eventually coming under the direction of his elder brother Boscoe Holder. Soon Boscoe invited people to view Holder's works and was encouraged by the warm reception he received. In 1954 Holder held a successful solo show at Barone Gallery, New York followed by a Guggenheim fellowship award in 1957.

LT. COL. JOHN FITZGERALD NOTE RELAYING GEORGE WASHINGTON ORDER REGARDING WILLIAM WEST PROPERTY, 1777, FRAMED "His Excellency the Commander in Chief having granted a protection for W. West's Woodland when the Army encamp'd at this place - He is further pleas'd to direct that such parties of the Standing Army or Militias may from time to time Encamp at or near Church Hill, cut no wood belonging to W. West, but supply themselves out of the Woods adjoining to his Land. Given at White Marsh Dec 25th, 1777 by order of his Excellency, John Fitzgerald, Aid-de-Camp". Fitzgerald was Aide-de-Camp and Secretary to Gen. Washington (along with Alexander Hamilton). He served in that position Nov 1776 - July 1778 (this written to Valley Forge from HQ at White Marsh on Christmas Day.) Housed in a gold molded frame over black field, glazed. OS: 10" x 13", sheet size: 5" x 8 1/4", folded in fourths, soiled, separating at folds, edge chips. The Philadelphia Print Shop label dated Feb 1995 verso.

ANTIQUE DRAWING OF WELCHES OF ALABAMAWonderful 19th century southern charcoal drawing (gouache highlights) of an older gentleman and his wife seated on porch while he reads and smokes a pipe and she knits. Identified on back as Dr. William Welch (1820-1901) and Nellie Ann Welch (1827-1896) at their home at Magnolia Hill, Talladega County Alabama. Size: 19.5 x 15.5, framed 30 x 26 inches. Together with two circa 1844 tintype photos of both identified sitters ages 19 and 16 years old. 3.15 x 2.6 inches. (See other Welch family history & photos in subsequent lot).
