SUPERB ALABASTER BISON BY GORDON
SUPERB ALABASTER BISON BY GORDON VIGIL "EAGLE FEATHER"Gordon Vigil "Eagle Feather" (Native American, Nambe Tribe, 1961 to 2009) Buffalo, alabaster, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A striking alabaster carving of a bison, or more commonly known as a buffalo, in a lovely simplified form cleanly carved with a rounded and smooth surface. The arrow shaped tail resembles a heartline, symbolizing the breath or a lifeforce of the animal. The natural qualities of alabaster adding beautiful veining and when brightly backlit, the semi-opaque stone glows along the rear haunches. Vigil also went by the name Eagle Feather, and often signed his work simply with a feather, the left side of the haunches just above the base is inscribed "Eagle Feather Nambe Pueblo." Size: 12.5" L x 3.5" W x 9" H (31.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
Gordon Vigil's carvings are scarce with few known examples, however a "Kokopelli" sculpture by Gordon Vigil is part of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian collection, catalog number: 26/4316.
