SILVER FIGURAL CANECa. 1890-Large
SILVER FIGURAL CANECa. 1890-Large silver handle fashioned in the shape of a stylized and crested eagle head emerging of an eagle claw with four talons and with, what seems to be, a curving giant eagle claw in its beak. Rarely encountered and decorative flamed citronier wood shaft and a white metal ferrule. The head is hand chased and engraved with fine and naturalistic detail and embellished with a pair of inset glass eyes. The outlines of two tiny obscured hallmarks hint for an Austrian origin. This cane is a piece of art on its own right and from the era before mass production lowered quality. It is loaded with decorative appeal, literally soaked with the saga of the eagle and appears to have been little and carefully used. H. 4 ½” x 4”, O.L. 36 ¼” The eagle is the chief over all the winged creatures. Eagle conveys the powers and messages of the spirit; it is man's connection to the divine because it flies higher than any other bird. The eagle brings the message of renewed life because it is associated with the east winds - the direction of spring, dawn and rebirth.

SILVER ART NOUVEAU EAGLE HEAD
SILVER ART NOUVEAU EAGLE HEAD CANE-Ca. 1900 -Modified Opera shaped silver handle embellished by a protruding eagle head at the front and an elegantly arched hand rest at the back, somehow suggestive of its wings. -The strong and stylish modeling is distilled to the essence, and, treated with an exceptional fluidity, it epitomizes many of the qualities of Art Nouveau. -Here, the study of Japanese art assisted the artist in his efforts to simplify nature, clearly displays his virtuosity and hints to the unique talent of Lucien Gauillard. -The architecture of the handle speaks as well in that direction and matches comparable pieces signed by Gaillard with its uncommon Triangular shaped hand rest and fringed collar. -The fact that the handle do not bear any hallmarks or makers marks is an incentive to believe that it must have remained a singular prototype and never mass-produced. -The handle comes with its initial rosewood shaft and a metal ferrule. It survived in superb condition and only in need of deeper surface cleaning. -Like the eagle it represents, this cane raises above the rest and is an amazing sculpture where function meets style and an artwork of genius of its own right. -H. 4 ¾” x 2 ½”, O.L. 35 ½” -$500-$600 -Lucien Gaillard was the son and grandson of Parisian jewelers, as well as the brother of the noted Art Nouveau furniture designer Eugène Gaillard. After Lucien took over the family firm in 1892, the emphasis switched to metalworking, frequently inspired by Japanese prototypes. Around the turn of the century, with the encouragement of his friend René Lalique, Gaillard turned back to jewelry. His designs, like many by Lalique, incorporated unusual materials such as horn and bone combined with more traditional precious stones, gold and enamel. The insect motif of this brooch is typical of the period.

104. SILVER EAGLE HEAD CANE -CA.
104. SILVER EAGLE HEAD CANE -CA. 1910 -SUBSTANTIAL, FIG...104. Silver Eagle Head Cane -Ca. 1910 -Substantial, figural eagle head handle modeled with striking stylized, features including a longer beak and thunder like decoration in clean lines which all hint to a developing Art Deco taste. Stepped partridge shaft and a metal ferrule. Praised by age and careful use, this cane is authenticated German with the struck national silver Reichsmark of a “Crescent Moon & Crown” representing the entire German state in conjunction with an “800” decimal silver standard marks. -Many silver handles of this type were done by Tiffany & Co. NY and are known under the name “Tiffany Nast Eagle”. The American eagle was a popular motif in the 19th century States especially during periods of high patriotic zeal. However, this walking cane may not have been meant to be patriotic, as for sailors the eagle held a different symbolic importance. As even the oldest birds continually renew their feathers, they were believed to be symbolic of eternal life and eternal love. -H. 4 ¼” x 2 ¾”, O.L. 34 ¼” -$600-800
