Carl W. Peters (American, 1897-1980)
Carl Peters was an American artist who learned about sign painting, set design, illustration, and landscape painting while attending the Rochester Mechanics Institute (now the Rochester Institute of Technology). Most of his painting was done in the rural countryside around his hometown of Fairport, New York and around Cape Ann, and the town of Rockport, Massachusetts where he spent his summers painting the harbor and rocky seaside with bold contrasting colors. In the fall, winter, and spring Peters would paint the landscape around his childhood home. He was especially fond of painting the snow-covered rooftops and icy streams of the region in the winter months. Peters painted images based on the landscapes of Fairport and Rochester and insisted on sketching on the spot, even in severe weather.

Through the early twentieth century, membership was comprised primarily of German immigrants and, for many years, the union's publications were issued exclusively in German. The name was changed in 1917 and was changed again just three years later to the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal and Soft Drink Workers of America, likely in the wake of Prohibition, as it operated until 1973 when the union merged with the Teamsters.

MARK TWAIN PASSENGER CRUISE LIST TOMARK TWAIN PASSENGER CRUISE LIST TO ITALY, 1903 Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens, a fine, colorful and uncommonly found example of the passenger list of a cruise he took with his family to help get Olivia to a more healthful welcoming place due to her health issues. The Princess Irene Left New York October 24th, 1903 owned by the North German Lloyd Steamship company, 4 p.p.,clearly listing the Clemens family of which included Himself, wife, 2 daughters and a maid. Olivia's health began worsening and, advised to keep a distance from her husband in order to keep from getting overexcited, went months without seeing him. However, Twain frequently broke the rule and secretly saw her in order to exchange love letters and kisses. By the end of 1903, doctors' advice led the Clemens family to move to Italy for the warm climate where they resided in a rented villa outside of Florence. The passenger list also includes, Mrs. Augustus St Gaudens, William Greene Roelker, Wilson Levering Smith, Mr. Waldo Lincoln, and many others.

A LIVELY AND IMAGINATIVE HALLOWEEN CREPEA LIVELY AND IMAGINATIVE HALLOWEEN CREPE DECORATIONThe large panel appears to be folded and twice the size visible. The design is an imaginative scene of flying witches in various positions riding jack-o-lantern brooms pulled airborne by teams of bats.Overall framed size measures 24.25 x 30.25 and the piece is 14.5 x 21.5 inches.Apparently the condition is very good, very clean, intact, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears. This has not been examined outside the frame.
A LARGE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PAPIER MACHEA LARGE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PAPIER MACHE SKITTLES GAMEThe large, container with lift-off cover in the form of a circa 1900 French judge's hat holds the figural, painted papier mache' skittle pins and three kid leather game balls with hand stitched seams. The skittle figures relate to French society through depictions of a worker, police commanders, male and female judges in robes, an avocat or lawyer, and three figures perhaps related to clergy given their collar but with what appears to be ermine on their robes. The French parlor game of 'jeu de quilles', which literally translates to 'skittles', was very popular in late 19th century France, and elsewhere, especially European countries. Examples like this 1890s set with nine pins and three rare, original hand laced kid leather balls such as these are very scarce.Measures 16.5 x 17.5 x 17.5 inches. Each measures approximately 12 inches tall.Good condition, noting wear to the thin, fragile coat of finish, and the general effects of age and use as shown.
A 19TH CENTURY FOUR PATCH BROKEN DISHESA 19TH CENTURY FOUR PATCH BROKEN DISHES PATTERN QUILTThe unwashed quilt with alternating Broken Dishes and Basic Four-Patch blocks is very finely stitched in tight diagonal lines, the border of polished chintz is resolved at each corner in fussy cut mitered seams, all finished with muslin backing and binding.Measures 96 x 94 inches.Very good condition, noting scattered storage browning stains and toning.
