JACK FELLOWS (B 1941) "LOCKHEED VEGA AIRPLANE" OILJack Fellows (American, Born 1941) "Lockheed Vega Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Lockheed Vega stamp issued July 19, 1997.
Using part-owner Jack Northrop's novel design, the new Lockheed company unveiled its streamlined Vega on July 4, 1927. Considered to be the most streamlined plane ever built, the four-passenger, high-wing monoplane could cruise at 135 mph. The plane's speed was later increased to 155 mph by enclosing the radial Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine in a smooth metal cowl. Even though it was never widely used by the commercial airlines, the Vega was made famous by former airmail pilot Wiley Post, who named his Vega "Winnie Mae" and flew it around the world in 1931 . . . and by Amelia Earhart, who flew her Vega nonstop across the Atlantic in 1932.

WILLIAM RICE WOODBLOCK - "MOONLIGHT EUCALYPTUS TREES"**First Time At Auction**
William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873-1963). "Moonlight Eucalyptus Trees" color woodblock, ca. 1920. Signed and titled in pencil below image. A stunning color woodblock by Arts and Craft artist William Seltzer Rice entitled "Moonlight Eucalyptus Trees". Rice's tranquil landscape features several Eucalyptus trees rendered in silhouette as the moon shines bright, dappling its glowing light upon clusters of mushrooms growing beneath the leafy canopies as well as the serene body of water beyond. In addition, Rice's cool shades of blue further imbue the scene with a soothing, peaceful quality. A beautiful woodblock by William Rice, an important contributor to the San Francisco Bay Area Arts and Crafts Movement as well as the Berkeley Art Colony, mounted in a custom, lavishily gilded frame. Please note: The gilding was tested via x-ray fluorescence and contains 33.5% gold. Size: 10" L x 5.8" W (25.4 cm x 14.7 cm) Size: 21.875" L x 17.875" W (55.6 cm x 45.4 cm)
About the artist: "William Seltzer Rice, painter, printmaker, educator, and author, was born to Sarah Graeff Seltzer and John Maurer Rice on June 23, 1873 in Manheim, Pennsylvania. He moved to Philadelphia in the fall of 1892 to attend the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art and was awarded a three-year scholarship to the school the following year. In June of 1894, Rice received a Certificate in Industrial Drawings and the following June he received a Certificate in Decorative Painting and Applied Design.
After graduating in 1895, Rice was hired as staff artist for the Philadelphia Times but continued taking classes with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute. In August 1900, on the invitation of his friend and former cohort Frederick H. Meyer - who would later found the California School of Arts and Crafts (CCA) - he took a job as Assistant Art Supervisor in the Stockton Public Schools in California. It was at this time that he first visited Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and other California landscapes that would be a continual source of inspiration to Rice.
Ten years later Rice relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, seeking an opportunity to become more involved in one of the West Coast's leading Arts and Crafts hubs. He was a part of the Berkeley Art Colony and participated in their Exhibition of California Artists show at the Hillside Club in 1911. After touring Europe in the summer of 1913, he expanded his exposure to printmaking techniques, and that year he took a course in woodblock techniques taught by Ralph H. Johonnot, an associate of Arthur Wesley Dow. As well, he pursued intaglio printmaking, working in drypoint and etching to produce images of his adopted county. Two years later, he found further inspiration in the Japanese woodcuts shown at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition. This cemented his desire to become a woodcut artist, and in 1918 he held his first major exhibition of linocuts and woodcuts at the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco. In 1933, he was awarded 'Best Print' by the California Society of Etchers.
While working as an artist and exhibiting, Rice continued to teach in the Alameda Public Schools as well as summer courses at the CCA and extension courses at UC Berkeley. He would remain an educator for thirty years, teaching painting, drawing, woodcut, metalworking, and leatherworking. In 1929, he received his BFA degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts). That same year he published his book, Block Printing in the Schools; he would later publish Block Prints: How to Make Them (1941). He counted Pedro de Lemos, Gustave Baumann, Roi Partridge, and the Gearhart sisters among his major influences.
Rice was a member of the Print Makers Society of California, California Society of Etchers, Prairie Printmakers, Northwest Printmakers, and the San Francisco Art Association. He exhibited with the California Water Color Society, Association of American Etchers, Print Club of Philadelphia, and the Wichita Art Association. His work is represented in the collections of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Boston Public Library, Fitzwilliam Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, New York Public Library, Oakland Museum of California, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Worcester Art Museum.
William Seltzer Rice died at his home in Oakland, California on August 27, 1963." (The Annex Galleries)

- ERIC SLOANE, AMERICAN (1905-1985), STONE
ERIC SLOANE, AMERICAN (1905-1985), STONE BARN IN AUTUMN, OIL ON MASONITE, 20 X 39 INCHESERIC SLOANE, American, (1905-1985) Stone Barn in Autumn, oil on masonite signed lower left "Eric Sloane NA" oil on masonite Dimensions: 20 x 39 inches Provenance: Property from a distinguished American collection. -- Eric Sloane was born Everard Jean Hinrichs in 1905 to an upper middle-class family. He took an early interest in art and learned to paint letters and signs from his neighbor the noted font inventor, Frederic Goudy. As a young artist he painted the markings on planes flying out of Roosevelt Field in Long Island. Famed American aviator, Wiley Post, taught Sloane how to fly in exchange for painting lessons. Amelia Earhart is said to have purchased his first cloud painting and his largest cloud painting is on the wall of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. (a commission he earned at age 75). Sloane left home at a young age and worked as a sign painter in various locations, most notably a stay in Taos, New Mexico. In 1925, he traveled throughout the Northeast where he became enamored with the covered bridges, barns, stone walls, and farmhouses dating to the colonial era. He felt the spirit of America in the early architecture and would paint, draw, and write about his perspectives for a career that spanned six decades. In the 1950s he started writing and sketching books on his version of Americana, focused primarily on New England and Pennsylvania farmhouses, barns and landscapes. In 1953 he purchased and restored a farm in Brookfield, Connecticut and moved to various towns in the region of Lake Candlewood including Merryall and Warren where kept a home until 1985. He painted early American scenes especially the barns and covered bridges of Western Connecticut. The present lot, Stone Barn in Autumn, depicts a stone barn set in rolling hills dappled with light. Attuned to architecture and weather, Sloane's paintings capture the spirit of a place by taking into consideration every visual element and clue in the architecture and landscape but also the effects of the air on the light and shadows. In addition to his success as an artist he is credited as an authority on rural American architecture and early American tools. His extensive tool collection outgrew his home in Warren and he donated them to the Sloane-Stanley Museum in Kent, Connecticut. --- Framed dimensions:28 x 46 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches Tags: oil painting, Americana, Pennsylvania, New England, Autumn Condition: very good condition with a few minor spots of inpaint upper edge due to frame rub, in a period Eric Sloane frame Condition
