ALBERT CARRIER-BELLEUSE (FRENCH, 1824-1887) NYMPH IN THE REEDS Two-toned patinaed bronze. Signed 'A. Carrier' at base.
Albert Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887)
Albert Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor. He was one of the most important and innovative sculptors of 19th century France. Dr. Anita Brookner called him a ‘manipulator of styles’, an epithet addressing Carrier-Belleuse's versatility and fearless experimentation in the fine and decorative arts. Carrier-Belleuse is the name used by this sculptor - born Carrier de Belleuse - on his mature pieces, after initially signing works "A. Carrier." Carrier-Belleuse was an established internationally as a high-art sculptor.
He produced abundantly for a variety of international patrons in most categories of three-dimensional work - public monuments, for example, Masséna (1867, Nice), allegorical reliefs for Parisian buildings (Palais des Tuileries and Banque de France, 1865-1866), tombs for foreign heroes (San Martín Cathedral, Buenos Aires, Argentina), and classicizing figure subjects such as Sleeping Hebe for the Salon (1869, marble; Musée d'Orsay, Paris) - while simultaneously maintaining high visibility in the applied arts. Carrier-Belleuse made many terra cotta pieces, the most famous of which may be The Abduction of Hippodameia depicting the Greek mythological scene of a centaur kidnapping Hippodameia on her wedding day.

EYVIND EARLE (1916-2000), "SILENT THUNDER," SCREENPRINT IN COLORS ON PAPER, SIGHT: 23.75" H X 31.75" WEyvind Earle, (1916-2000) "Silent Thunder", Screenprint in colors on paper Edition: AP 45/45 (aside from the edition of 310) Signed and numbered in ink along the lower edge of the image: Eyvind Earle; an artist's proof Screenprint in colors on paper Dimensions: Sight: 23.75" H x 31.75" W Provenance: Eyvind Earle was born in 1916 in New York, NY, and he began painting with the encouragement of his father. Many of Eyvind Earle's paintings were exhibited in a one-man art show held in France when he was just 14. He produced numerous landscape watercolors during those early years, and Eyvind Earle's art for sale financed his exploratory bicycle trip from Hollywood to New York. Eyvind Earle's prints were first produced one Christmas during the Great Depression years when he began an enduring custom of creating his own lino-cut and printed festive season greeting cards. He spent the 1950s working for Disney, and his earliest work was on Peter Pan as a background painter. He made his name on Sleeping Beauty, where for the first time ever, the animators had to follow the lead of the background painter. About 20 years later, Eyvind Earle's prints of imaginary California landscapes were immensely popular.
