Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) Autograph Letter, one page, duodecimo, signed and dated June 17th, 1844, no place given, to Cornelius Mathews (1817-1889), reading: "My Dear Mr. Mathews, I send you the beginning poem of my second volume: I send packet after packet to you & you "make no sign" in return. It is ominous! & I have entered afar a wonder as to whether I may not have killed you with ennui. Forgive me as far as a "soul in bale" can. Present I shall be able to write a letter to you - but now I can only write myself with every sense of obligation. Sincerely, E. B. Barrett", accompanied by a clipping of the letter's description in the original unidentified sale catalogue, presumably that of Emily Driscoll, New York. New York poet Cornelius Mathews was the recipient, between April 1843 and November 1844, of several letters from Elizabeth Barrett. Mathews was associated with Graham's Magazine which, through his intercession, published eleven of Barrett's poems between December 1842 and April 1844. He was instrumental in introducing her work to an American audience, particularly through his critique in The Democratic Review of her two volumes of 1844, part of which is apparently referenced in this letter. It was likewise these two volumes which drew the attention of her future husband, Robert Browning (1812-1889). This letter is recorded in the definitive fourteen volume The Browning's Correspondence (Winfield, KS: Wedgestone Press, 1984-1998), vol. 9, p. 22, letter 1632. See also Martha Hale Shakleford, ed. Letters from Elizabeth Barrett to B. R. Haydon (New York: Oxford University Press, 1939) pp. lvi-lvii for information about Barrett Browning's relationship with Cornelius Mathews.
