Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky
Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky 1899-1977) "Grinding Workers: New Jersey Defense Plant" oil on plywood signed lower left 16 in. x 20 in. Provenance: Gift of the artist to a close friend New York City and then as a gift to the current owner. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund. Note: Born to a working class family Ellis Wilson grew up in the close-knit African-American community of Mayfield Kentucky. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago he moved to Harlem then a thriving cultural enclave for African Americans. As an artist Wilson earned critical acclaim exhibiting with the prestigious Harmon Foundation and from his work for the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). He earned the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1944 on the strength of his New Jersey Defense Plant series of paintings. In 1952 Ellis Wilson won the Terry Art Institute Award which afforded him travel to Haiti. This experience profoundly affected the artist's work in terms of style and reveals a heightened use of vibrant color.

RAY ELLIS "CHICKORY" LANDSCAPE WATERCOLOR, FRAMEDRay Ellis (American, 1921 - 2013) watercolor landscape featuring the chickory plant signed lower right "Ray D. Ellis A.W. S.". Double matted & framed under glass, with a framed height of 36" with width of 28-1/2", & having sight image height of 28" with width of 20". In overall good condition, no foxing or tears. All measurements are approximate.
Ray Ellis attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, & in 1947 at the age of 26 had his first one-man show at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was elected to the American Watercolor Society & in 1968, to the Salmagundi Club in New York, the oldest established professional art association in the country. From 1969 on he worked exclusively as an artist, & became a nationally recognized artist whose paintings are in the permanent collections at The White House & in museums around the country. Mr. Ellis and the late television journalist Walter Cronkite collaborated in the 1980s on a series of three books depicting America's coastlines in word and image: "South by Southeast, North by Northeast, and Westwind". There are fifteen other books exclusively devoted to Ellis's paintings. Raymond George Ellis died on October 4, 2013 in Edgartown, MA. due to complications from a stroke.
