PAUL KIRK MIDDLEBROOK THOMAS (PA, 1875-1962) Portrait of Emily Drayton Taylor, life-sized waist length, depicting a woman in black, with a white scarf, black broad brimmed hat having feathers (circa 1905), her left hand on her belt clutch, her right hand on a long silver eyeglass chain, with frame tag naming subject and artist and giving her birth date as April 14th, 1860, housed in a gold deep cover frame with gesso edge, OS: 53 1/2" x 33 1/2", SS: 47 1/2" x 27 1/2". Good condition.
Emily Drayton Taylor (Mrs. J. Madison Taylor) 1860 - 1952 was a miniature painter from Philadelphia. Awarded gold medal, Earl?s Court, London, 1900, Charleston Exposition, 1902; silver medal, San Francisco Exposition, 1915; medal, Miniature Society of Pennsylvania; Medal of Honor, 1919; Charles M. Lea money prize. Academy Fine Arts, miniature exhibition, 1920. Painted portrait of Cardinal Mercier, 1924, and awarded special money prize by Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts for same.

Canvas relined; varnish is dirty and was sloppily applied streaks of varnish throughout painting mostly flanking figure varnish is thick in places and very thin in other places; rubbing to paint in sections along frame; newer inpainting visible in several spots with and without UV: in background to right of left arm another spot further up and right of previous spot a spot above dressline at right hip and spot in doll's lower hemline. Older inpainting to hairline on right side of head with the possibility of more old inpainting to figure not detected under UV. Rosy cheeks have been cleaned. Frame is not original.
