EARLY AMERICAN SAMPLER.
EARLY AMERICAN SAMPLER. Elizabeth King Essex County Massachusetts 1765 silk and metal on linen. Wide floral borders on three sides of the center cartouche denoting the maker's name and the date. In the pictorial a man in a tricorner hat smokes a long clay pipe with his dog at his side. The lady is carrying a basket on one arm the other hand outstretched holding a flapping bird. Metal wrapped thread ornaments both figures. In a old gilt frame 16 1/4''h. 16 3/4''w. The sampler has not been attributed to any specific girl as the name Elizabeth King was not uncommon in early Massachusetts. The sampler shares similar design motifs with other early Essex County samplers. See Ring Girlhood Embroidery p. 103 fig.110. Small amount of toning. The metal thread is loose in a few places. Minor thread loss. Faint ink outlines in a few areas on the border. The dark area in the center of the photo is a shadow from the pole it is hanging on. There is no backboard.
