W.A. MACQUOID STONEWARE CROCK, FIFE AND DRUMImportant New York six-gallon stoneware crock, ca. 1870 , impressed W.A. Macquoid & Co. Pottery Works Little Wst 12th St. N.Y., with a large cobalt depiction of two Civil War officers playing the drum and fife, flanking a keg with two tankards on top, 12 3/4" h. Known for his figural decoration, the present example stands out as Macquoid's most ambitious work known. Exhibited Museum of American Folk Art Always in Tune: Music in American Folk Art, September 21, 1989 - November 26, 1989. Provenance: Allan Katz Americana, Madison, CT.
Condition:
Two 1/2'' rim chips. Shallow chip to base. A few short glaze lines to side and back. Two longer lines to rim, probably in the firing.
