THOMAS J. WHEATLEY FOR P.L. COULTRY
THOMAS J. WHEATLEY FOR P.L. COULTRY & COMPANY ART POTTERY SIGNED AND DATED BARBOTINE VASETHOMAS J. WHEATLEY FOR P.L. COULTRY & COMPANY ART POTTERY SIGNED AND DATED BARBOTINE VASE, Cincinnati, OH, dated 1879, incised Thomas J. Wheatley, Cincinnati, clover and cross in an arch insignia, in the 19th Century Haviland Limoges taste, of pear shape painted in layered slip with a red and white petaled flowering vine, the background splashed and painted with broad brush strokes in white, grey and black, h: 9.25 in. Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling Literature: Prior to opening his Cincinnati based studio, Thomas Jerome Wheatley is recorded as a teacher at Coultry Pottery, working alongside artisans such as Mary Louise McLaughlin, founder of the Cincinnati Pottery Club. On June 21, 1880, Wheatley is recorded submitting a patent for an underglaze slip decorating process developed by McLaughlin. A dispute ensued and he did not attempt to enforce his claim. On the advice of her brother George, who was a lawyer, McLaughlin said she had not patented the technique, as "It was an application of pottery with 'slip' known from time immemorial, but which introduced such possibilities as to color and handling that it was really a new discovery." Later she came to regret this decision. For further details on the evolving rivalry with Maria Longworth Nichols Storer at Rookwood, see Anita Ellis, 'The Ceramic Career of M. Louise McLaughlin', p. 91. For a similarly marked example by T.J. Wheatley at Coultry Pottery, see the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum Exhibition, 'Earth into Art, The Flowering of American Art Pottery', Object Guide, no. 11.
