BATTLE OF ST. AUGUSTINE MAP AND
BATTLE OF ST. AUGUSTINE MAP AND ILLUSTRATION, 1740 A copper engraved map titled "A View of the Town and Castle of St. Augustine and the English Camp before June 20th 1740, by Thomas Silver. With a numbered key panel and text, "Account of Siege of St. Augustine", London, c.1741. Early piece of Florida history. Framed in archival mounting and protective glass and a brownish black frame with intricate design on front edges. After the War of Jenkins Ear erupted in 1739, James Oglethorpe, the Governor of Georgia, was ready to take the initiative. In 1740, he assembled an invasion force consisting of his regiment, Indian allies, Carolina Rangers, and several ships in the Royal Navy. His goal was the Spanish fortress at St. Augustine. Unfortunately, the siege failed and the allied force fell apart, forcing a dejected Oglethorpe back to St. Simons Island to await the Spanish counterattack that would surely follow.

AN IMPORTANT LATE LOUIS XV
AN IMPORTANT LATE LOUIS XV ORMOLU, WHITE MARBLE AND PORPHYRY PENDULE à CERCLES TOURNANTS Michel Stollewerck, circa 1765. Signed Stollewerck A Paris, signed two train movement, verge escapement.Catalog Note: Michel Stollenwerck was of German birth but recorded in Paris by 1730. He first established his workshop in the precincts of the Abbey St Germain des Pres in 1739 but moved to the rue de la Comedie Francaise by 1747. Stollenwerck had exceptional mechanical talent and specialized in musical clocks. Stollenwerck supplied clocks for the French nobility and the crowned heads of Europe including King Stanislas Leszczynski, Frederick II of Prussia and Augustus III of Saxony.
The horizontal rings that indicate the time in cercles tournants clocks can be troublesome, in that they can rub or jam if incorrectly balanced, or not handled with great care. The 90 degree change in the direction of rotation required to drive the rings can also introduce problems. The clock offered for sale here demonstrates Stollewercks innovative solution to this problem. By using rings of rigid construction, a stout, well supported motion transmission arbor, and a disc with wheel bearings to reduce friction and to decrease the chances of the rings fouling each other, the failings of other clocks of this type are avoided. He invented this system. The square, two train movement is very well made and finished, and a testament to the fine work being done in Paris during the mid 18th century.
Stollewerck employed the finest craftsmen of his time for his clock cases, including bronziers such as Jean Joseph de St. Germain and Robert Osmond. The stonework and castings are of exceptional quality, and appear to retain most of their original gilding. By the time of his death in 1768, he was considered to be one of the finest makers in Europe.

CADWALLADER LINCOLN WASHBURN
CADWALLADER LINCOLN WASHBURN (1866-1965), FRED DAVIS'S GARDEN IN CUERNAVACA, OIL ON CANVAS, 25.5" H X 26" WCadwallader Lincoln Washburn, (1866-1965) Fred Davis's garden in Cuernavaca, Oil on canvas Signed lower right: Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn Oil on canvas Dimensions: 25.5" H x 26" W Provenance: The Collection of Frederick W. Davis Private Collection, Southern California, by descent from the above Other notes: Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn was known as "the silent artist" and was quoted as saying "deafness may sometimes be an inconvenience but never a handicap". Primarily known for his mastery of "capturing the spirit of the subject" in his more than 900 drypoint etchings and numerous paintings, he had an incredibly varied life and career as not only an artist but a journalist and enthusiastic naturalist. Washburn lost his hearing at age five and attended Gallaudet College in Washington, DC, an institution for the hearing impaired, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1890. While he originally planned to study natural science and entomology, enlivening his essays with illustrations of spiders, bees, and caterpillars, he discovered a love for drawing at Gallaudet. He went on to study architecture at MIT, and even though he considered this choice a compromise, he won a First Award in Design. Still favoring a more artistic path, Washburn later studied art with William Merritt Chase in New York and traveled to Europe along with Chase and other students, studying with Albert Besnard in Paris and with Joaquín Sorolla in Madrid. During this trip, Washburn became interested in etchings, likely inspired by some of Whistler's etchings seen in Venice, and through trial and error, taught himself and created his first drypoint etching in Paris in 1903. He exhibited regularly at the start of the twentieth century in both Europe and the USA. As he mastered the art of etching, he also became a war correspondent, along with his brother, for the "Chicago Daily News," covering the Russian Japanese War of 1904-05. Washburn later traveled to Mexico in 1910 to study architecture and Mexican culture, and while there, covered the Madera Revolution in Mexico from 1910-12. After spending his winters in Mexico, Washburn moved to California, where he exhibited 50 prints at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, and won a gold medal. By 1937, failing eyesight forced Washburn to give up etching. Undaunted, he returned to oils and produced some beautiful paintings, marked by a fluid, brushy technique and with an emphasis on light and atmosphere. Washburn married in 1943 and settled in Maine. He returned to studying insects, arguing for the intelligence and communication skills of spiders, bees, and caterpillars. His essay entitled "The Mind of a Spider" became required reading in the 1940s in the Washington D.C. public schools! The last part of his life was spent in Maine, where he died on December 21, 1965 at age 99. "His incredibly varied experiences gave his work an authenticity and universality seldom matched by any modern artist. However great he was as an artist, and he was truly great, he remains most fascinating as a man." H x 37.5? W x 7.5? D. Note: The schooner yacht Atlantic was built for Wilson Marshall, designed by William Gardner of Gardner and Cox in 1903. She was captained by Charlie Barr, a two-time Americas Cup winner, who drove Atlantic through a violent gale and crossing the Atlantic in 12 days, 4 hours. She was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard for World War II, and was later used for sail training at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Eventually she was broken up, and attempts to salvage her for restoration failed. She ended her career on the banks of the Delaware River.

VERY RARE CHINESE 'LEGEND OF THE
VERY RARE CHINESE 'LEGEND OF THE WHITE SNAKE' AUTOMATONPainted wood, papier maché, enamel, silk and metal in three wood and glass casements raised on a later Hongmu wood stand; fitted with moving figures and animals amongst pavilions in landscapes.
4 ft. 6 1/4 in. x 6 ft. 4 in. x 15 in.
Note: Narrative scenes of the legend are contained within the three casements. The central and largest depicting the famous battle between the immortal Bai Suzhen (the white snake) and her enemy Buddhist monk Fahai. Bai Suzhen amasses an army of underwater demons to flood the temple where Fahai has imprisioned her husband Xu Xian. The attack fails as Fahai magically commands the mountain to rise out of harm's way. The temple appears amongst the towering rocky mountains, varying trees, foliage and swirling colorful clouds. The left casement illustrates further scenes from the drama including the rescue of Bai Suzhen from the Leifeng pagoda where Fahai is holding her captive after the birth of her son. The right casement depicts other moments from the legend among them, the disapproving monk Fahai wielding a sword with other figures in landscapes with pagodas.
The tradition of automata originates with clock making which was introduced to China as early at 1601 by Spanish Jesuit missionaries. This impressive example example dates from the Qing Dynasty and represents the demand for clocks by elite members of society which included a palace workshop dedicated to the craft. A small clock in the Palace Museum, Beijing, set within a ‘landscape’ similar in palette and style to the automaton, and accompanied by two blue birds comparable to one in the present example, attributed to the 19th century.

FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861-1909),
FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861-1909), REGISTER ROCK, IDAHO Peter Hassrick wrote, "Geological curiosities become the signposts for civilizations on the move. When the terrain is unfamiliar, natural landmarks guide travelers across uncharted reaches, serving as beacons in the wilderness. But as the paths become worn, so do the guideposts. They soon take on the etched identity of the people who pass and inevitably reflect the human failing to record that 'Kilroy was here."'
"Register Rock in Idaho served the Oregon Trail, and Remington's depiction of it embodies the whole story of Western migration. The bewildered Indian gazes in wonderment at the scribbled initials of an intruding civilization. The cow skulls tell of the journey's hardships for animals that did not complete the journey to greener pastures. This site was the resting spot for many wagon trains; here they spent the night and cooked a meal which may well have consisted of their own oxen."

In 1978 she was honored alongside her son, Lanier, by the Library of Congress in Washington, DC with Meaders Pottery Day. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
