James Fairman, 1826-1904,
James Fairman, 1826-1904, Scottish American, o/c, Sunset over the Skyline of Jeruselem, 32" x 45", burlap liner behind the canvas, 1 2/" x 1 1/4" area of damage in right center of painting, 1/2" x 1/4" slight puncture in upper left corner above clouds, the stretcher with iron corner braces with 1885 patent date. Generally excellent "As Found" condition, James Fairman worked as a landscape painter, critic, lecturer, musician, and teacher. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1926. Fairman came to the U.S. with his family in 1832. studied at the National Academy of Design in 1842, and exhibited drawings at the American Institute in 1846. After serving as a colonel in the Civil War, he opened a studio in New York City. George Herbert McCord (1848-1909), who later become known for his watercolors, oils, and pastels, is said to have studied with James Fairman in 1866. In 1871 he returned to Europe and spent ten years studying in Italy, France, Germany, and England. In 1891 he was a resident of Los Angeles and, while there, made a trip north to paint the Golden Gate and exhibit at the Mechanics' Institute. Fairman was one of the many artists who painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the late 1800s. In 1871, he went to Europe where he spent the next nine years. In the 19th century, many Americans traveled abroad, and often visited, depicted, or wrote about the Holy Land, where they often found corroboration of just about any ideological or aesthetic viewpoint they chose to maintain. Fairman returned and became a teacher at Olivel College beginning 1880. His works were shown at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATION - FAIRFIELD
LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATION - FAIRFIELD PLOUGHING MATCHfrom Frank Leslie's Newspaper as found in the Estate of Philip Roth framed 11x14
Property from the estate of Philip Roth. Philip Roth was born in Newark New Jersey on 19 March, 1933. The second child of second-generation Americans Bess and Herman Roth, Roth grew up in the largely Jewish community of Weequahic, a neighborhood that he was to return to time and again in his writing. After graduating from Weequahic High School in 1950, he attended Bucknell University, Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago where he received a scholarship to complete his M.A. in English Literature. In 1959, Roth published Goodbye Columbus - a collection of stories and a novella for which he received the National Book Award. Ten years later, the publication of his fourth novel Portnoy's Complaint brought Roth both critical and commercial success, firmly securing his reputation as one of America's finest young writers. Roth was the author of thirty-one books including those that were to follow the fortunes of Nathan Zuckerman and a fictional narrator narrator named Philip Roth through which he explored and gave voice to the complexities of the American experience in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Roth's lasting contribution to literature was widely recognized in his lifetime, both in the United States and abroad. Among other commendations he was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the International Man Booker Prize, twice the winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award and presented with the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal by Presidents Clinton and Obama respectively. Philip Roth died on 22 May 2018 at the age of eighty-five having retired from writing six years previous.

STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) "CURTISS F8C-1 HELLDIVER"Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Curtiss F8C-1 Helldiver Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued November 1, 1991.
Between the World Wars, America was able to make much progress in its military technology. One fine example of this was the F8C Helldiver, the first production Navy aircraft designed for dive bombing. The biplane soon replaced the DH-4 Liberty Plane. The Helldiver could pull off steep dives upon target ships, dropping a single 500-pound bomb or twin 116-pound bombs. At the time, the plane was the only two-seat aircraft in the Navy's fighter squadrons. Some, like those delivered to the carrier U.S.S. Saratoga in August 1930 were welcome additions to the ship's arsenal. The plane could hit targets far out at sea and return to the carrier. The importance of its part in aircraft development cannot be denied since sea-launched planes would play a crucial role in the coming Second World War.
