DRAWING OF THE ORIGINAL PHILADELPHIA WATER WORKS The Neo-Classical Fairmount Water Works, charcoal and chalk chiaroscuro, the second municipal water works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, designed in 1812 by Frederick Graff, erected between 1812 and 1872 on the Schuylkill River, was in use until 1909. In the background on the right is another bit of landmark engineering: James Finley's Chain Bridge over the Schuylkll Falls, erected in 1800 and collapsed in 1816 under a heavy snow. Seems to date this drawing as having been done between 1812 and 1816. In walnut ogee frame with gilt liner, under rippled old glass, OS: 23 1/2" x 31 1/2", SS: 19 1/4" x 27 1/4", some minor spotting.
