DON BALKE (B. 1933)
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "GYRFALCON"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Gyrfalcon" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 37c Gyrfalcon Arctic Animals stamp issue of July 2, 2003.
The largest falcon in the world, the gyrfalcon Falco rusticolus can reach up to two feet in length. Especially prized in falconry (the 4000-year-old sport of employing falcons in hunting game), the gyrfalcon is traditionally known as the "bird of kings." In medieval diplomacy, it played an important role as a valuable present. Even today, modern falconers often pay princely sums -- well into the many thousands of dollars -- for a single specimen. The gyrfalcon is an intensely capable bird: while the eagle often uses its large size to rob meals from other birds of prey, and the peregrine falcon counts on gravity to gain high speeds in a pursuit, the gyrfalcon relies on sheer raw power alone to capture its prey, usually in an intensive tail chase. Although slower than other falcons as it begins a chase, it quickly gains momentum and can outfly the fastest duck. The gyrfalcon's persistence and determination in pursuing its quarry distinguishes it from all other hunting birds and is key to its legendary status: it simply does not give up, following its chosen target until the fleeing creature is worn out, captured or lucky enough to find impregnable refuge. Its extremely keen eyesight -- many times that of man -- allows the gyrfalcon to spot all but the most well-camouflaged of prey. A noble bird revered worldwide for its courage, power and grace, the gyrfalcon is, fittingly, the official mascot of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

FALCONER CARVINGEurope
15 3/4 in. tall
Falconry was widespread in medieval Europe. During the reign of King Edward VIII (1327-1377), the theft of a trained raptor was punishable by death. The growing popularity of firearms during the 1800s resulted in a plummet in the popularity of falconry.

U.S. Maltese Falcon Plaster Movie
U.S. Maltese Falcon Plaster Movie Prop Let us talk about the black bird. It measures 12'' x 5.25''. Not a greatly detailed casting but an interesting display piece. It has been debated for years if they used plaster birds in the movie. The original two falcons were made of lead and weighed 50lbs. each. Bogart complained. so lighter ones were made; some say four plastic replacements were made and some say seven plaster ones were made. After the success of the movie release plaster ones were made as souvenir and decorator pieces. The one in Library of Congress is plastic. Condition: Very good.

EGYPTIAN LAPIS LAZULI FALCON W/
EGYPTIAN LAPIS LAZULI FALCON W/ INLAID GOLD EYEEgypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A gorgeous falcon figure of petite size and exquisite form that is hand-carved from mottled, azure blue lapis lazuli with dark brown, burnt ochre, and khaki hued inclusions. The majestic raptor stands upright with attenuated legs atop an integral rectangular plinth and presents its rounded chest that hangs slightly over the plinth's edge. Both teardrop-shaped wings are laid atop its back with the tips folded atop the tab-shaped tail, and an integral suspension loop is situated just beneath the neck on the verso. The squat head features a nubbin aquiline beak, a cavity atop the head that held an attached headdress at one time, perhaps the Pschent crown, and a pair of deep orbitals with a 68.25% gold eye inlaid within the proper left cavity. With smooth surfaces and deep coloration, this is a wonderful example of ancient Egyptian lapidary sophistication! Size: 1.35" L x 0.67" W x 1.34" H (3.4 cm x 1.7 cm x 3.4 cm); gold quality: 68.25% (equivalent to 15K+)
The falcon was traditionally associated with several Egyptian deities. In addition, the falcon was a symbol of the sky-god Horus as well as the sun-god Amun-Ra and the war-god Montu, who was also a solar deity. According to Egyptologist Dorothea Arnold, "The ancient Egyptians believed their kind was an incarnation of the sky god, Horus, who appeared as a falcon." She also writes how, "In their representations of Horus Egyptian artists depicted a generalized falcon, rather than any one particular species, even though Egypt is home to several. The Lanner falcon, Falco Biarmicus, and the peregrine, F. peregrinus, for example, still nest and breed in the limestone cliffs at the desert margin and in the ruins and pyramids. The birds can be seen rising on updrafts of hot desert air and performing amazing acrobatics. Th[is] sculpture follows the Late Period tradition of animal images in hardstone . . . with remarkably naturalistic details in the head and feet, while the body and wings are simplified renderings of the bird's natural features." (Arnold, Dorothea. "An Egyptian Bestiary." The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, Spring 1995, Vol. LII, no. 4, p. 45)
