Record of William Coffin (b.1781) and Deborah Swain (b.1784) and their ten children spanning the years 1804 to 1829. The couple spent their entire lives on Nantucket where they raised eight of their children to maturity. Imperfections. In a modern decorated frame 18''h. 14 1/2''w. MASSACHUSETTS FAMILY RECORD. Sally F. Leighton Middlesex County 1829 silk on linen. Birth dates for Francis and Mary Leighton and their nine children death dates for two of the children worked in black thread. Signed and dated on bottom. In a frame 21 1/2''h. 20 3/4''w. Newspaper clipping on reverse states the needlework was done in Natick at a district school. The 1830 Massachusetts census lists a Francis Layton (Leighton) in Natick with children of corresponding ages.

Provenance: Obtained directly from a collection of historical paper items -- from the Ashfield, Skaats and McNeal families of New York -- none of which has ever been offered for sale. Several lots of these papers, including historically important pieces, are being offered in today's auction. The family, represented in several of the items in the collection, owned land directly adjacent to Wall Street, and some of the pieces refer to these parcels.

W. Pugh (1850-1916) of North Carolina. Drawing on papers and oral traditions, Pugh drew family trees showing generations from first U.S. arrivals in 1665. Of particular interest are transcriptions of letters Pugh received that mention soldiers who fought in the American Revolution against the "British Wolf," Lord Tryon; engineers that laid the foundations of the fortification against the British at Old Point Comfort by Yorktown and a letter that mentions Elizabeth "Betsy" Barker (-1803) of Bertie County, NC, a reputed girlfriend of Thomas Jefferson who later married Col.
