PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS, IN THE CHINESE CHIPPENDALE NEO-GOTHIC TASTEFitted with upholstered needlepoint seats.
37 3/4 x 25 x 24 in., height of seat 18 in.
Note: A similar set of chairs with carved gothic arches and quatrefoil decoration were sold at Christie's, NY, The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, May 8, 2018, Lot 128. This is the lot essay which accompanied the lot: 'These chairs were likely inspired by the designs of Thomas Chippendale, the most influential cabinet-maker of the 18th century. The third edition of Chippendale's pattern book for furniture design, The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director , 1762, includes illustrations for chair backs with related pierced gothic arches (plate XVII0, and similar blind fret-carved legs (plate XXVII).
Additional patterns for chairs uniting classical and gothic elements were published by Robert Manwaring in The Cabinet and Chair-maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765 and The Chair-Maker's Guide, 1766 as well as in his contribution to A Society of Upholsterers, Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, circa 1765 (E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1990 pp. 69, 72-74 and 77-81). Other features, such as the use of bold nailing patterns, are featured in Thomas Malton's Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775 (e. White, op cit. , p. 85). FINE AND UNUSUAL GEORGE II MAHOGANY
FINE AND UNUSUAL GEORGE II MAHOGANY WINDSOR ARMCHAIR40 x 30 1/4 x 26 1/2 in., height of seat 16 in.
Note: A fine pair of George II Mahogany Hall Armchairs were sold in The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, Christie's NY, May 9, 2018, lot 646 and sold for $52,500 hammer price.
This is the essay which accompanied the chairs in the Christie's catalog: "This pair of hall armchairs relates very closely to a chair illustrated in Michael Harding-Hill, Windsor Chairs , London, 2003, p. 76, and to another similar chair exhibited by Whitney Antiques at the 1997 Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair. Although these chairs share similar constructional characteristics with provincial Windsor chairs, including turned spindles and solid seats, Windsor chairs are associated with more rural areas, such as the Thames Valley, where they would have commonly been fashioned from timbers such as ash, yew and elm. The use of finest mahogany for these grand chairs, coupled with the high quality of construction, suggests that these chairs were likely made by a major London cabinetmaker of the period.
These chairs are similar to a group of armchairs with vase-capped splats which probably formed part of a larger set, one from the Collection of Professor Sir Albert Richardson, P.R.A., sold Christie's London September 18-19, lot 31 (32,500 GPB) and another sold Christie's London, April 22, 2004, lot 29, (45,410 GPB). These chairs are based on the designs of the Windsor chair and are related to a 1750s patter executed by Richard Hewett at Slough, (see N. Goyne Evans, 'A History and Background of English Windsor Furniture', Furniture History, 1979, pp. 24-53, pl. 84), although he is unlikely their enigmatic maker. A closely related set of fine mahogany armchairs, conceivably by the same maker, line the marble hall at Holkham Hall, the Norfolk seat of the Earls of Leicester. A further pair of related George II mahogany armchairs was sold Sotheby's New York, April 11-12, 1997, lot 751 ($46,000)."
Condition
Small repair to the top crest, one spindle replaced. Old repair to the right armrest support with age cracks, staining and scuffing to the seat. Old repairs to the seat on the front corners. Structurally sound, grand in scale. Fine quality. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

PERCIVAL ROSSEAU (1859-1937)Pair of
PERCIVAL ROSSEAU (1859-1937)Pair of Aces, 1921
signed and dated "Rosseau 1921" lower right
oil on canvas, 12 1/2 by 19 1/2 in.
Percival Rosseau was born near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1859. Although considered a premier painter of sporting dogs, he did not pick up a paintbrush until the age of thirty-five. After leaving an eclectic business career, including stints as a cowboy and a lumberjack, he sailed to Paris to attend the Académie Julian. His entry at the 1904 Paris Salon, a painting of a pair of Irish wolfhounds, gained him pivotal acclaim. He returned to the United States where he found a ready market for his work among wealthy sportsmen and received many commissions from first-rate breeders of pointers and setters. Rosseau’s best works capture the tense action of hunting dogs and depict them in romantic landscapes.
Among these patrons was Percy Rockefeller, nephew of oil tycoon John. D. Rockefeller and a successful businessman in his own right. Along with several investors, Rockefeller built Overhills, a private hunt and country club with stables and kennels in Cumberland County, North Carolina. He kept a cottage on the property for Rosseau to use when he traveled to the state, and the artist painted there throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
Dog historian A. F. Hochwalt writes, “Eventually such men as Samuel G. Allen, Harry D. Kirkover and others who own high class shooting dogs began to cultivate his acquaintance, for artists who can portray the pointer and the setter, as he really appears in the field, those who are able to transfer to canvas an actual hunting scene where the dog is not a mere caricature, are few and far between the world over, but particularly so here in America."
Rosseau’s debt to the Barbizon tradition is apparent in “Pair of Aces" with its softly defined brushstrokes, rich colors, and pastoral setting. This exceptional, small work is one of the artist's true gems.
