EARLY GEORGIA FOLK ART FIDDLE W/ PERIOD NOTESEarly Georgia folk art carved fiddle, entered into the 1860 Cotton Planters' Convention, together with an 1860 handwritten note reading "Georgia made Fiddle. Manufacture by W. Richard Jones, Columbus, Ga, Age 15 years, Implements, pocket knife, chisel and gimlet. His first attempt at the mechanical arts". An additional Cotton Planters Convention tag fragment accompanies the note and it shows the entry of the fiddle into the convention. Fiddle measures: 21" L x 6 1/2" W. Bow measures 24" L. Framed notes measure 9 1/4" H x 9 3/4" W.

Condition:
Fiddle is not fitted with strings, bow is likely associated with the fiddle and not original. Fiddle with light surface wear and minor scattered abrasions. Entry tag is missing lower left corner.

1878 CARVED PINE FOLK ART FIDDLE
1878 CARVED PINE FOLK ART FIDDLE CASEA beautifully hand-crafted pine folk art fiddle case with relief-carved foliate patterns and Germanic pinwheels or hexes, believed to be of Pennsylvanian origin. With German silver inlays identifying Johnathon Schutt as the owner and the date of 1878. Also with engraved German silver escutcheon with "J.S" monogrammed on surface. Along the fore edge of the case, there are two hand-painted portraits of young women, each framed in brass into the case behind glazing. The case closes with two snapping clasps.
Measures 9 x 30.25 x 9.5 inches.
Condition
Case is in very good condition, and has been kept in protected location. There is minor reinforcement at brass hinges.
