Field Hospital of 81st Penn. Vols. Near Falmouth VA Original Pencil Drawing Plus Shred of Battle Flag Original pencil drawing by Surgeon John Houston Jr. 81st Pennsylvania titled in the lower margin Hospital of 81st Reg't P.V. in Camp near Falmouth Va. / Winter of '62 & '63 and framed with a blue shred of the 81st's first battle flag. 7.25 x 8.5 in. housed in period frame with typewritten identification/provenance on backing indicating that this was from the son of John Houston Jr. M.D. John J.L. Houston of Philadelphia PA dated July 29 1932. John Houston Jr. enlisted in August 1862 as an Assistant Surgeon and was commissioned into Field & Staff of the Pennsylvania 81st Infantry. He was promoted to Surgeon in January 1863 and was mustered out in September 1865. The 81st Pennsylvania participated in several major battles throughout the war including Yorktown Antietam Fredericksburg Chancellorsville Gettysburg Wilderness Spotsylvania Cold Harbor Petersburg and Appomattox among many others losing 18 officers and 190 enlisted men that were killed or mortally wounded and 2 officers and 96 enlisted men that died of disease. Condition: One light fold line and toning at left and right edges.
