Large numbers of volunteer firemen were needed to assist the regular fireman during the World War II bombing of London and other cities of Great Britain. It was through the courage of the Auxiliary Fire Service (A.F.S.) that many of the fires of the air raids were held in check. The Heroes of the Blitz set of jugs were commissioned by Lawleys By Post in a limited edition of 9,500 sets.

Currier and Ives was founded by Nathaniel Currier (American, 1813-1888) in 1835 as "the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints," but changed its name with the addition of James Merritt Ives (American, 1824-1895) in 1857. The company created over 7000 popular lithographs depicting American life until 1907.
