ANDOR BASCH, (HUNGARIAN, 1885-1944)Wharf on the Danube, 1920. Signed, dated l/r, the reverse with parcel label. Oil on Canvas. 14.5 by 24 in., in a gilt period frame 23 by 33 in. CF. Andor Basch, began his studies in 1904 at the drawing school in Budapest under Tivadar Zemplnyi. From 1905 to 1910 he attended the Academy Julian in Paris and was a pupil of Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Matisse. During World War I he served as a war artist; from this time many detailed descriptions of war events originate, for example, In the Trenches Before the Attack, 1918. From 1920 to 1931 he lived in Paris and Italy and only in 1935 returned to Budapest. Basch's works are on display at several museums, such as Budapest National Gallery and just there at the Museum of Military History. Pencil-signed and titled in the bottom margin. Presented behind glass in a frame that measures 14 1/2" x 17 1/2".
Ella Iranyi was a Jewish Austrian artist whose lively paintings have sold at auction for sums as high as €16,000. Her artistic prime was cut short with the onset of World War II, when she was arrested by the invading Nazi forces and deported to the Izbica ghetto, where she would tragically perish.
Condition
Some wrinkling and imperfections to the delicate chine colle tissue paper, original to the piece during its creation. Minor toning from light exposure.
