CHARLES GRUPPE (AMERICAN, 1860-1940) "GOING TO PASTURE" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Chas P. Gruppe' (lower left). Original giltwood frame.Charles Gruppe (American, 1860-1940)
Landscape and marine painter Charles Paul Gruppe was born in Picton, Canada, September 3rd, 1860. When Gruppe was ten, he moved with his family to Rochester, New York, after the death of his father. Interested in painting from an early age, he spent much of his time sketching and creating watercolors and oils. To help support his mother and sisters, he worked in a sign-painting shop, soon mastering the craft.
Eventually, at age twenty-one, he had earned enough money to travel steerage to Europe, where he traveled through France, Germany, and Holland, searching for a place to settle and practice his art. He was taken with Holland, perhaps attracted to its fishing villages with their picturesque boats and quaint houses and decided to stay. He built a home and studio in the little fishing village of Katwyk Ann Zee and painted much of his European work in the vicinity of that town. Altogether, Gruppe spent over twenty years in Holland, becoming a celebrity artist and ultimately being patronized by the royalty of Europe. His work is represented in many museums in America and Europe.
Charles P. Gruppe died at age 80 in Rockport, Massachusetts, on September 30th, 1940 at his studio where he had been established during the summers for 15 years. The remainder of each of those years, he had spent in New York City, where he was an active member of the Salmagundi Club.

CHRISTIAN BENJAMIN OLSEN (DANISH,
CHRISTIAN BENJAMIN OLSEN (DANISH, 1873-1935) "RETURNING HOME, 1918" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Chr. Benjamin Olson 1918' (lower right).
Catalogue Note: The Danish people have an intimate relationship with the sea dating back to the rapacious Vikings who settled on the peninsula situated between the North Sea and Kattegat in Northern Europe. Throughout the country's history ship building, fishing and trade have been the primary industries; with most natives having some sort of ties to the trades, including Danish artists. Christian Benjamin Olsen is one such artist who was fascinated with ships and the various temperaments of the sea.
Spending much of his time in the fishing village of Skagen, located at the northern most point of Denmark, Olson would paint the many ships coming and going in the harbor. Judging from the detail in Returning Home, Olsen must have been familiar with shipbuilding. He also shows sensitivity to the effects of atmosphere and light. He meticulously paints the rosy reflections of the setting sun on the evening clouds and calm harbor waters and portrays the shadows caste from the tall ships onto the water. His skills as a Marine painter are undoubtedly equal to his contemporaries Frederick Sorenson, Fritz Melby, and Vilhelm.

W. Steenhoff, Onze kunst 3 (1904) Jozef Israels, p. 29-51 (illus. op p. 36.). Footnote: Jozef Israels (27 January 1824 - 12 August 1911) was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime compared to Jean-Francois Millet., considered the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century and even hailed as a second Rembrandt by some. In 1855, after spending time in various art academies including the ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and working as an academic history and landscape painter, after an illness he spent time convalescing in the fishing village of Zandvoort near Haarlem. It was there he witnessed the poverty of the fishermen and their families and his style changed dramatically. Israels work took on a poignant sense of empathy with the subjects and moments of life he captured. In May 1894 Jozef Israels traveled to Spain and North Africa with his son Isaac, also a painter, and the writer Frans Erens. Working often with his son, Israels paintings became more luminous, resembling Isaacs style. The piece offered here captures the artists late oeuvre with glowing light, subtle brushwork and a very sensitive approach to his subject matter.
