Mold-made, the fascinating vessel features 2 circular chambers upon conical feet that are connected at their midsections via a cylindrical tunnel. A charming figure positioned with its hands on its hips stands atop one of the vessel's chambers, while a slender, tubular spout rises from the other chamber. ROMAN IRON SPATHA W/ BRONZE POMMEL,
ROMAN IRON SPATHA W/ BRONZE POMMEL, IVORY HANDLERoman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful forged iron spatha of a bifacial design bearing a shallow midrib, extremely sharp edges, and a pointed tip. Situated along the tang are a hollow bronze hand guard with incised striations surrounding the flat face beneath the slightly convex topside, a hand-carved elephant ivory handle grip with a wavy design meant to accommodate a soldier's fingers, an adjustable ringlet with a sharp central carination, and a macaron-shaped pommel with incised striations around the midsection. The tip of the tang is fitted with a petite bronze cap that would have aided in holding all of these components in place in antiquity. Size: 30.6" L x 2.8" W (77.7 cm x 7.1 cm); (blade): 23" L x 1.8" W (58.4 cm x 4.6 cm)
The spatha was one of the most prevalent and widely used weapons in the ancient Roman Empire. According to professor of anthropology Michael D. Coe, "The spatha was of Celtic origin. The Romans were exclusively infantrymen, relying on their allies for cavalry. During the Gallic War, Caesar raised huge bodies of cavalry in Gaul. The Gallic tribes were also the target of Augustus' recruiting efforts when he started to form regular cavalry units to serve alongside the legions operating in the Rhineland. These units were equipped in native fashion with mail shirt, helmet, oval shield, and spear, and the long slashing sword that was to become the spatha, the primary weapon of the middle and later Empire." (Coe, Michael D. et al. "Swords and Hilt Weapons." Barnes & Noble, Inc., New York, 1996, p. 28)

Condition:
Blade, guard, pommel, and handle grip are possibly not original to one another but are all from the stated time period. All components were likely cleaned at one time. Repair to remaining ivory grip and roughly 2" portion of hand guard's rounded face closest to handle grip, with resurfacing on guard repairs, and light adhesive residue on guard and handle grip. Losses to portions of ivory handle grip as shown. Slight bending to overall form of blade with deformation and abrasions to tip, and light oxidation commensurate with age across blade and tang; cap adhered to end of tang. Abrasions and nicks to bronze components, with encrustations and softening to some finer details. Ivory handle grip has yellowing to surface coloration and extensive craquelure. Hand guard, handle grip, and ringlet all move freely along the tang. Nice patina throughout.

VIBRANT TRIASSIC ARIZONAN PETRIFIED
VIBRANT TRIASSIC ARIZONAN PETRIFIED WOOD SLABNorth America, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Late Triassic, ca. 225 million years ago. A massive and gorgeous slab of fossilized, petrified tree trunk, sliced crossways and highly polished on one of the planar sides to showcase the broad interior rings of the tree - beautiful and astoundingly colorful! The exterior bark is fossilized, replaced by rough stone, while the smooth interior features incredible, colorful quartz, and agate. The colors are mesmerizing - dominated by warm hues of red, rusty orange, and maroon with creamy white, gray-blue, lilac, and mauve swirls and striations. The flat face is sealed to protect the surface, and the bottom has a felt pad - this slab could be displayed on a tabletop and even used as giant coaster! Size: 17" Diameter x 1.125" W (43.2 cm x 2.9 cm)
Fossilized trees from this time period come from the Chinle Formation of the southwestern USA, and the beautiful colors found in this formation - exemplified by the colors of this fossilized tree - give the Painted Desert of Arizona its name. Due to plate tectonics, this area was near the equator on the supercontinent Pangaea during the Late Triassic, which gave it a humid, sub-tropical climate. It was a floodplain below mountains to its south and a sea to its west; as a result, massive trees washed down from the mountains and came to rest in sediments that preserved them and fossilized them. The petrification process involves the rapid burial of the tree or pieces under sediment which prevents the usual decay. Flooding and volcanic activity are usually responsible for creating the layers of sand, silt, and ash needed to create the right types and amount of sediment. Mineralized water can then permeate through the wood, coating cell walls and filling the intercellular cavities which then fossilizes into stone. The detailed preservation of the wood, including knots, rings, and bark, are possible because the organic wood molecules become coated and surrounded with smaller silica molecules. Nine different species of tree have been identified in the fossilized deposits in the region; this example may be Araucarioxylon arizonicum, an extinct conifer tree (and the state fossil of Arizona). Fascinatingly, the Ancestral Puebloan people who lived in the region approximately 1000 years ago used petrified wood for making tools and even building houses!

RITUALISTIC CHAVIN ANTHRACITE
RITUALISTIC CHAVIN ANTHRACITE DIVINATION MIRRORPre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. An enchanting mirror, carved from a single piece of anthracite stone, featuring a domed verso laterally drilled for suspension, and a flat face that is highly polished. The surface is like glass, silky smooth - the blackness of the anthracite creates an otherworldly softness to the reflection. The process to polish a stone to such a high level of reflectivity so that it retains its mirror qualities after nearly 2000 years is utterly remarkable! Mirrors were prized by the ancients of the Americas and believed to serve as portals to the celestial realm, treasured for their divinatory, healing, as well as decorative properties. Size: 4.75" Diameter x 1" W (12.1 cm x 2.5 cm)
