1799 Scottish sampler, eight lines of letters and numbers over flowerpots, plants and castle with tower, double flower vine border, stitched bottom line, most unreadable except "Aged 14 1799 Margaret INDE"(?), wool on linen, probably Scottish, late 18th century, 16-1/2 x 14 in. (sight); later wood frame. Browning to linen, losses to wool thread, fading.

NOTE: Possibly Susanna McLaughlin, born 1755, the youngest of two daughters born to Susanna [Campbell] McLaughlin and Colin McLaughlin, Kilmartin, Argyll, Scotland. At some point the spelling of the name changed from/to McLachlan. H: 12 1/4, W 9 1/2 in. - fading and discoloration especially to lower edge - several small holes - not examined out of frame

FINE SCOTTISH SAMPLER. Margret McNie 1826 silk on linen. Classic Scottish motifs include bands of elaborate alphabets lettering with contrasting outlining spread tail peacocks and over sixty pairs of initals. A couple the woman holding a parasol stand over an ornate building the piece is signed on the lower edge along with a ''remember me'' verse. Bright colors on clean ground . In a frame 28''h. 22 1/2''w. The edge has small nails holes a few edge with stains. A few breaks in the red thread. The sampler reads in part ''Margret McNie sowed this sampler in the year 1826 of .......This piece of cloth will tell my name when [I am long] forgotten''
