WILLARD, HARRY. WILLARD THE
WILLARD, HARRY. WILLARD THE WIZARD.Bandera: J. Marvin Hunter’s Printing House, ca. 1930. Pictorial broadside shows the performance of a levitation, suspension, flower growth, and basket trick. The magician who performs the feats bears little resemblance to Willard. Flowery and descriptive text fills the balance of the bill. 8 ¾ x 24". Minor edge chips; A-. Harry Willard was one of three men in his family to make magic his profession. Rumor has it he was not the only member of his family to use this broadside to advertise his show. Apparently first printed at the turn of the century, the Willard family, ever economical, reused the same billing material for decades in their tours, which crisscrossed the American South season after season, playing under large canvas tents.

REYNOLDS, H.B. COMING! PROF. H.B.
REYNOLDS, H.B. COMING! PROF. H.B. REYNOLDS.Providence: What Cheer Print, ca. 1880. Unused letterpress broadside bearing a detailed stock woodcut at its center picturing the magician on stage, the balance filled with descriptive text regarding Reynold’s performance, including his escape from “100 feet of cord in the hands of the most expertitious in knot tying.” 10 ¼ x 29". A-. Typical of the era in which the poster was produced, and similar in style to the bills of Professor J.H. Anderson, this broadside includes bombastic claims and flowery language. To wit: “Sceptics of holy writ have denounced their skepticism as they behold demonstrated in this nineteenth century the original and more marvelous illusions than was ever performed by the ancient Egyptians or the Necromancer of India.”

Magnificent letterpress broadside embellished with a woodcut illustration showing the Wizard on stage with a pistol in one hand. Flowery language fills the bill to overflowing, describing the feats he will perform at the Theatre Royal, Bristol, mentioning in no uncertain terms that the tricks he will exhibit will be many of the same performed before Queen Victoria. These include the Inexhaustible Bottle, Dejeuner Magique, The Magic Scrapbook, The Suspension Chloroforiene, and more. 10 ¾ x 34 ¼". Restoration to borders only slightly affecting some text, minor soiling, old folds prominent. B.

174. SILVER DAY CANE -CA. 1890
174. SILVER DAY CANE -CA. 1890 -L-SHAPED SILVER HANDLE ...174. Silver Day Cane -Ca. 1890 -L-shaped silver handle modeled with pleasing rounded edges and hand chased in a rich Baroque taste with dense scrolls, shells and other decorative elements. Furthermore embellished with a wider and integral silver collar engraved with flowery initials “FM”, the handle comes on a throughout well-figured snake wood shaft and a horn ferrule. Best Imperial Viennese opulence is on display here with an unbelievable detail in exceptional, high relief and the benefit of two hallmarks authenticating it to the best Viennese Imperial days. -H. 4 ½” x 3”, O.L. 35” -$400-$500 -Piratinera guianensis or snake wood belongs to the family of Moraceae and originates in tropical South America. It is a truly exotic species and probably one of the most difficult woods to find. Typically, it is a very small tree, and only shows the wonderful reddish brown heartwood with speckles of black appearing as hieroglyphics or snakeskin markings in a small quantity of the wood, and then rarely evenly spread across the entire face of the board. Its markings, which resemble those of a snakeskin, give this small, relatively rare timber its name. Snake wood is dense, extremely heavy and hard, brittle and splits easily. It becomes very smooth when finished and has natural polish.

10. SILVER FIGURAL ART NOUVEAU CANE

Silver Figural Art Nouveau Cane -Ca. 1900 -Heavy silver handle modeled with to depict a female head with encircling vine extending in a round seal with flowery initials. The composition conjures up a misty world that is characterized by naturalistic and organic forms with curvilinear and rhythmic contours. It evokes memories of a distant dream, which is inhabited by languid female figures with thinly veiled symbolism and sensuality. So-far, so-good, however, what makes this cane more desirable, is that it is a dual purpose cane also intended to be used as a seal. Ebony shaft and a metal ferrule. The flowing curves and voluptuous imagery of Art Nouveau continue to seduce and are avidly sought after by collectors today. -H. 3 ½” x 2”, O.L. 35 ½” -$800-$1,200

ROCK CRYSTAL DRESS CANE20th Century-Straight and tapering rock crystal handle with a fascinating natural frosted structure, plain silver collar with flowery engraved initials “GCM” besides a full set of Birmingham hallmarks, ebonizesd hardwood shaft and a metal ferrule. Canes with hard stone knobs and handles were costly to produce and reserved for noble and wealthy clients. Their enduring appeal makes these pieces perennial favorites and extremely collectable today. H. 2 ½” x 1”, O.L. 37 ½” Rock Crystal was once believed to be ice, which had been frozen so long that it could never melt and had turned into stone. This theory was accepted until 1676 when a scholar pointed out that roc crystal often occurs in the tropics. Rock crystal is natural crystalline quartz, which is usually colorless and transparent. Carved rock crystal was highly prized during the renaissance period. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was used for cameos, seals and high-end cane handles and was polished or faceted for jewelry.

SILVER DRESS CANE-Ca. 1890 -Large
SILVER DRESS CANE-Ca. 1890 -Large and well-proportioned crook handle with a body modeled in a cylindrical shape and extending in a bulbous nose streamlined designed with three panes and pointed tip. The handle is lavishly hand chased in low relied and finely engraved with mirrored panels of floral foliates and blooms and personalized with the initials of its first owner engraved in a flowery style on an escutcheon at the front. -It is authenticated with the French silver guarantee Eagle head for a high-grade 1st Standard, 925-1000 precious metal title and an obscured maker’s mark and comes of a fitly very fine-grained rosewood shaft with rich brownish-red hues and a horn ferrule. -Accomplished in its design and execution, this elegant and statement making cane is an absolute gem of silversmith artistry and beautiful collector’s piece. In some countries, the testing of silver objects and marking of purity is controlled by a national assayer’s office. -Hallmarks are applied with a hammer and punch, a process that leaves sharp edges and spurs of metal. Therefore, hallmarking is generally done before the piece goes for its final polishing.

Makers of Fine Gold and Silver Headed Walking Sticks from New York, NY. -Anyhow, it survived the test of time brilliantly, honors American cane making skills and is an over the top collectable in every sense. -H. 4” x 1 ¾”, O.L. 38” -$400-$500 -Mother-of-pearl or Nacre is an iridescent substance that forms the lining of the shells of some fresh-water and some salt-water mollusks. This lining protects the shellfish from abrasions and irritants that can get inside the shell. When a foreign object such as a piece of sand enters the shell, the lining protects the oyster and the nacre begins to build up on the foreign object – as such pearls are formed. The shiny nacre that develops on the inside of the shell and essentially “gives birth” to a pearl by transferring that nacre to the foreign object is the mother of pearl. The pearl is the shaped nacre formed on the foreign object.
