Documents from Early America Plus
Documents from Early America Plus Lot of 13. ADS account sheet for Jelles Fonda from William Walker 2pp 7 x 11.75 in. Linon (New York?) 3 Jan. 1791. Account for transportation over about 3 years 7 Jan. 1788 to Jan. 1791 plus interest. Still calculated in pounds shillings pence. Although the name is too common to locate William Walker Jelles Fonda is certainly well known in the Mohawk Valley. Jelles was a lawyer who became a member of the King's Court in New York (Tryon County) in the early 1770s. When the split with the king came Fonda along with Peter Conye and John Wells supported the rebel cause; the other four judges remained loyal to the king. Fonda died about 6 months after receiving this bill 23 June 1791. DS 1p plus docketing on verso 6.25 x 8.25 in. Montgomery County NY Feb. 1785. Legal document involving a dispute between Peter Ale and wife against John Joseph Schuyler and wife. Signed by Schuyler and with Anna Schuyler's mark. John Joseph Schuyler also appears as Hans (or Hon) Yost Schuyler or Johannes Justus Schuyler in the records of the day. Schuyler had Tory sympathies which were used by General Benedict Arnold to discourage the British and Indian forces of Col. St. Leger from their siege of Ft. Stanwix. Schuyler had been captured with Lieutenant Walter Butler. The men were tried as spies and sentenced to be hanged. Butler escaped but Schuyler who was described by some as slow-witted or a lunatic remained in American hands. General Arnold decided that he could put Schuyler's background to use by sending him back to St. Leger and having him exaggerate the size of the American forces so the British troops would return to Canada. Reportedly Schuyler had spent more time with the natives of the region than its English citizens even adopting Iroquois manners and dress. And in his deceipt of his British allies he seems to have enlisted the aid of a few Oneida friends who ''confirmed'' that the Americans were more numerous than the leaves on the trees. St. Leger withdrew and Schuyler went home. LS 1p 7.5 x 12.25 in. Albany 30 Sept. 1779. Pass signed by Jacob Cuyler as purchasing agent for the Northern Department of the Continental Army. In the document Cuyler notes that: ...Mr. John Bleecker and Company have Twenty seven Tierces and one Hogshead Rum in the state of Massachusetts which [was] purchased for the use of the Army and ... they are apprehensive from a late Resolution of the General Court of that State that the said Rum will be detained he therefore requests that Mr. Bleecker be allowed to continue to Albany. Clipped signature of Marius Willett on approx. 1.5 x 4.5 in. paper along with lithograph of Mr. Willett. Marinus Willett was an officer in the French & Indian Wars and in the Continental Army eventually becoming Colonel of the Tryon County militia. He was a judge in the court that convicted Walter Butler of espionage. After the war he was elected to the State Assembly. As Sheriff of New York County (1784-1787 1791-1795) he was in charge of putting down Shays' Rebellion. He later served as Mayor of New York City 1807-1808. ADS 1p with docketing on verso 7 x 12.75 in. New York 27 June 1796. Document signed by Silas Talbot notifying the Honorable Andrew Adams of a meeting regarding a case being heard in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Silas Talbot (1751-1813) was an officer in both the Continental Army and Navy. He commanded the USS Constitution from 1798 to 1801. He served in the Continental Congress representing New York (1793-1794) just after the war. DS 2pp 6.25 x 6.75 in. [Montgomery Co. NY] 14 June 1785. Legal document signed by Zeph. Batcheller Judge. Zeph. Batcheller is listed on the Harwick MA muster roll as Sergeant in Captain William Paige's Hardwick Co. Crown Point Expedition. He and William Batcheller also had served in the French & Indian War as Sergeants. Lot also includes 7 lithographs of Revolutionary War figures: Henry Clinton George Washington (3) General Carleton Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Tallmadge. Condition: All mounted on larger sheets cut out so both sides visible. Expected folds and light toning. Only
