FOOTSTOOL OF HISTORIC INTEREST. Nellie Soloman Sawyer Concord Massachusetts dated 1900 pine. Of simple shape with an older finish the underside inscribed ''This footstool is made from the bottom step of the celebrated Concord School of Philosophy. Ralph W. Emerson Bronson Alcott Louisa Alcott D.A. Wasson J.W. Higginson Dr. Bartol E.D. Cheney Miss E.P. Peabody and many other noted men and women have walked upon it.'' Losses. 5''h. 14.75''l. The Concord School of Philosophy was founded in 1879 by Bronson Alcott and Franklin Sanborn and ran until 1888. Essentially a series of lectures and discussions on philosophical topics they often focused on the works of Transcendentalists. The first meeting was in Alcott's home but moved to Hillside Chapel on the Alcott property in 1880.

Polychrome depiction of a golfer in mid swing at the third hole with clubhouse behind, in 1920s garb, 47" x 64" x 4 1/2", light crack above arched intermediate molding.
