ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS.
ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS. MOSES B.) RUSSELL (MASSACHUSETTS, 1809-1854), MINIATURE WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT ON IVORY OF A YOUNG GIRL WEARING A BLUE DRESS AND HOLDING AN APPLE., OVAL 2.75" X 2.25". FRAMED 3" X 2.375".ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS. MOSES B.) RUSSELL, Massachusetts, 1809-1854, Miniature watercolor portrait on ivory of a young girl wearing a blue dress and holding an apple. Unsigned but bearing several characteristics of Russell's work, including the striated background with a subtle "halo" around the girl's head, the prominent eyes, the finely delineated eyebrows and fingernails, the nearly imperceptible line at the wrist that separates the forearm from the hand, the delicate details on the dress and the vividly colored apple. Dimensions: Oval 2.75" x 2.25". Framed 3" x 2.375". Provenance: Notes:In her day, Clarissa Peters Russell was a well-known miniaturist, specializing in portraits of children. Her work was so favored that when she died from a violent case of seasickness, the news made the front page of Boston newspapers.Over time, however, like many women artists, she faded into obscurity. Because she rarely signed her paintings, many of them were misattributed to her husband, also a miniaturist, or to itinerant portraitist Joseph Whiting Stock. She was born in North Andover, Massachusetts, and it is believed she attended Franklin Academy. She married Moses Russell in 1839 and the two had a son, Albert Cuyp Russell. By 1835 she was in Boston painting miniatures and giving private lessons. From 1840 to 1851, she shared a studio with her husband and was very much part of the city's art scene. Her portraits are notable not just for their fastidious details, but for being sympathetic and vibrant likenesses, in contrast to the more typical solemn and flat depictions of young sitters.Reference:"Mrs. Moses B. Russell Boston Miniaturist" by Randall L. Holton and Charles A. Gilday, The Magazine Antiques , December 1999, p. 816-823.

O/C, MR. AND MRS. NOYES, NEW ALBANY
O/C, MR. AND MRS. NOYES, NEW ALBANY AND KYPair 19th century portraits. Subjects of the painting are John E. (likely Emery) Noyes and his wife, Almyra Baker Noyes, of Louisville, Kentucky, circa 1860-65. Both are depicted seated in Victorian Rococo Revival style chairs with red upholstery; Mr. Noyes holds a book and Mrs. Noyes holds an open ambrotype or daguerreotype. She also wears a portrait brooch containing a miniature painting of Mr. Noyes at her lace collar. According to census records, John Noyes was born circa 1816 in Pennsylvania and moved to the Louisville Kentucky area, where he met and married his wife, Almyra (Allie) Noyes. Their three children were born in Kentucky (their portrait is also offered in this auction). John Noyes also spent considerable time in New Albany, Indiana, where he was on the building committee that established the Disciples of Christ Church at Lower Third and Market Streets; he later served as one of its ministers. He purchased property in New Albany in 1865 and from that site sold boots, shoes and dry goods. In 1879 he lost the building to sheriff's sale (although it still stands). In the 1880 census he listed himself as a schoolteacher, living in Louisville with his family. He is buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Accompanied by a file of information on its restoration and research into the history conducted by the late owner. Painting was professionally conserved at Winterthur's Art Conservation Program in 1985 with full report enclosed. According to this documentation, the painting had been in Mrs. Green's family for four generations and was originally owned by Carl C. Giers. It passed to his son Otto, whose wife, Sarah "Sallie" Hunter, "being very much a Victorian Lady, did not feel the painting was proper to hang in her house, so she relegated it to an outside shed in the back of the house and this is where it sustained most of the damage that occurred over the years." When their daughter, Hunter Giers Hicks (Mrs. Edward Dickson Hicks IV) inherited it, she brought it out and hung it in the main house. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
