PAUL FORSTER PAINTING - FIGURE IN
PAUL FORSTER PAINTING - FIGURE IN THE FORESTPaul Forster (American, 1925-2012). Oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on verso. A captivating painting by Paul Forster depicting a lone figure in a woodland. Forster chose to render this figure as a silhouette - golden in color to resonate with the prominent tree trunks amidst foliage of tranquil sage green and buttercup yellow hues, indicating that the leaves are changing color in this autumnal scene. The figure in the wood's blurred presence creates an air of mystery, suggesting a spirit or fairy-like manifestation surrounded by radiant light. What's more, the flatness of silhouette contrasts with the textured impasto Forster used to delineate the foliage. Finely rendered with a keen eye for composition, color, light, and texture - Forster's painting is notable not only for his remarkable artistry but also for the narratives it invites us to imagine. Size: 24" L x 29.9" W (61 cm x 75.9 cm)
Born in Buffalo, New York, Paul Forster became the youngest member of the Albright Art Gallery Association at the age eight and also started studying at the Museum School with watercolorist Robert Blair. During World War II, Forster served in the Army Air Corps, and in 1952, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a Fine Arts Degree. In the late 1950s, Forster had a studio in Nevada and painted murals for the Mormon Church. In the early 1960s, he taught art and became Chairman of the Art Department of the L.D.S. Schools of the South Pacific in Tonga. Then, in 1969, he left Brigham Young University to paint full time. For the greater part of the next decade, Forster traveled throughout the American Southwest in an Airstream trailer to paint. In time, he moved to Oregon followed by Kansas City, but eventually returned to Arizona.
