LOT 184: ANDERSONVILLE PRISON CIVIL
LOT 184: ANDERSONVILLE PRISON CIVIL WAR CARVING AND SOL...Civil War Andersonville prison items including a carved treenware miniature basket with incised floral and geometric decoration (3 1/2" H), a 1/6 plate tintype of a Union soldier holding a revolver, and a 1/6 plate cased ambrotype of a young man in formal attire. These images have the written and oral history of being brothers, John and William Fryar of Washington Co., TN, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry Company H. Provenance: Fryar family of Washington, Co., TN. Note - Privates John Fryar (b. 1841-1863? ) and William H. Fryar (b. 1839-1864?) of the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry Company H were captured at the Battle of Rogersville on November 6, 1863. On November 6th, Colonel Garrard of the 7th Ohio Calvary was in charge of the company when it was attacked and routed on the road outside Rogersville. Garrand then called upon Major Carpenter of the 2nd Tennessee, to hold the position. Colonel Garrand was unsuccessful rallying his men and consequently fled to Morristown, leaving Major Carpenter and his regiment without support. The Tennessee regiment was surrounded and captured by forces under Colonel H. L. Giltner, 4th Kentucky Cavalry, CSA. Both Fryar brothers were eventually sent to the Confederate prison camp at Andersonville, GA and records indicate both died in captivity. This treenware basket was passed down through the family and is believed to have been carved by either John or William Fryar.
Condition:
General surface wear and scratching. Split to one side due to age. Ambrotype missing cover to case, wear to left side of face of soldier, tintype unframed with wear and abrasions.

Southern School 20th c. "Live Oak
Southern School 20th c. "Live Oak Plantation St. Francisville" oil on canvas signed "Kilmer" lower right 24 in. x 31 5/8 in. framed. Note: This beautiful plantation home was built in 1809 by Captain Elijah Adams. The live oak alley for which the plantation is named and the galleries add a particularly Louisiana feel to a house whose interiors seem more New England in nature with plain trim decorating the walls and fireplaces. Live Oak was owned by the Barrow family until 1928 the LeSassier family until 1975 and the Turner family thereafter.

FERN ISABEL COPPEDGE (american 1883-1951) FARM BUILDINGS WITH A TREE IN THE FOREGROUND Signed 'F. Coppedge' bottom right, oil on canvas 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8cm) provenance: Buckner's Art Shop, Topeka, Kansas. ,000-12,000 Condition Summary: The painting is in very good condition both aesthetically and structurally. It has very little restoration. UV reveals one small area of retouching that corresponds to a paper label or patch attached to the back of the canvas. There is a discolored natural resin varnish on the painting and the paint layer has a fine network of age cracks that correspond to quilting on the back of the canvas. The paint layer is currently stable. The stretcher is period and likely original.
