MICHAEL RAY CHARLES, AMERICAN
MICHAEL RAY CHARLES, AMERICAN 1967-, AN EMINENT EVALUATION - FOREVER FREE, 1995, ACRYLIC LATEX AND COPPER PENNY ON PAPER, SHEET: 60 X 36 IN. (152.4 X 91.4 CM.), FRAME: 66 3/4 X 42 3/8 IN. (169.5 X 107.6 CM.)MICHAEL RAY CHARLES, AMERICAN, 1967- AN EMINENT EVALUATION - FOREVER FREE, 1995, Acrylic latex and copper penny on paper Lower right signed and dated: Michael / Ray / Charles / 95; verso label: Tony Shafrazi Gallery Stock # MC.5915 Catalogue note: Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Michael Ray Charles currently splits his time between Austin, Texas and Ghent, Belgium. Prior to earning his MFA from the University of Houston, Texas, Charles studied design and advertising, an experience that had a significant influence on his early work. Charles achieved mainstream recognition when he worked as a visual consultant on Spike Lee's 2000 film "Bamboozled," which also featured several of his paintings. In 2001, his work was highlighted by PBS in the first season of Art:21. For the program, Charles was interviewed about his subversive use of advertising and pop culture motifs, and stated: "First of all, you've got to think of how these images were used in American culture. I mean, for the most part, they were everywhere, and they were used to market anything from oils to ink, from food products to clothing, and so forth and so on. So I think, again, people operate from an emotional place when they see these images, because they think of the past as being something that happened and the concepts don't linger. But these concepts continue to affect us in many ways, in modern concepts of advertising as well as in contemporary advertisements. These concepts are re-appropriated and re-presented, so we're not very far from them." Michael Ray Charles was the recipient of the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize in 2018. He taught at the University Texas at Austin before joining the faculty of the University of Houston as a distinguished professor of painting. He was named the Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist for 2024. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. Acrylic latex and copper penny on paper Dimensions: Sheet: 60 x 36 in. (152.4 x 91.4 cm.), Frame: 66 3/4 x 42 3/8 in. (169.5 x 107.6 cm.)
