HENRY MACGINNIS (AMERICAN,
HENRY MACGINNIS (AMERICAN, 1875-1962) BULL RUN DAM, C. ...Henry MacGinnis (American, 1875-1962) Bull Run Dam, c. 1916 oil on canvas In very fine condition with rare Newcomb-Macklin frame Signed H. R. MacGinnis lower left 40 in. h. x 30 in. w., image 51 in. h. x 41 in. w., as framed Henry Ryan MacGinnis, 1875-1962, was born in Indiana and began his art studies under the eminent Hoosier artists T.C. Steele, J.O. Adams and William Forsyth. One of his earliest exhibitions was in 1896, when he showed his work with other notable Hoosier artists such as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, R.B. Gruelle, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Clarence Ball. In 1900, MacGinnis left Indiana to study in Europe. For five years, he painted and studied in Paris and Munich, where he won Honorable Mention from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Audubon Artists, Hoosier Salon, Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists. In 1908, soon after MacGinnis returned to the states, William Merritt Chase, chairman of the Exhibition Committee of the 19th Annual Exhibition of the Art Club in Philadelphia, selected the MacGinnis painting New Hampshire Hills for an important exhibit. The show included paintings from other artists such as Mary Cassatt, Ernest Lawson, Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase. A broad look at MacGinnis' work suggests a concern with impressionism; however, for the most part, MacGinnis stayed within the realm of realism often softened by an impressionistic approach. As mentioned, MacGinnis began painting with the Hoosier artists in Indiana, primarily focusing on landscapes from that region. In 1924, MacGinnis moved to Trenton, New Jersey where he both taught and continued to paint. He focused on painting portraits and landscapes near the Delaware River and New Hope, Pennsylvania region. During this period, he also painted many landscapes and seascapes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Cape Breton, New Jersey, and in Vermont and New Hampshire. - Richard Frey

Pencil inscription en verso of wafer reads "Ivory miniature of Marion Steward (sic) Forsyth-Antisell born Detroit, Michigan married Dr. Thomas Antisell. My great-great grandmother, circa 1865-1867, Yeu-Qua No. 93 Queen's Road, Hong Kong". 5 5/8" H x 4 7/8" W. Dr. Antisell immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1848 to the U. S. to escape charges of "treason felony" levied by the British government as a result of his involvement in the Young Ireland movement. He established a medical office and a chemistry lab in New York in 1848 and later accepted the position of geologist on the Park Railroad Survey Expedition of Southern California and Arizona. He returned to Washington, DC in 1856 where he accepted the position of Chief Examiner in the Chemical Department of the Patent Office. In 1861, shortly after the start of the Civil War, he entered the Union Army as Brigade Surgeon, with the rank of Major, where he worked as medical director with various Army Corps in the Army of the Potomac. ANTONIO JACOBSEN OIL ON CANVAS
ANTONIO JACOBSEN OIL ON CANVAS "AMERICA'S CUP TRIALS, 1...Important Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921) Oil on Canvas " America's Cup Trials, 1871, Yacht Dauntless ", signed lower right Antonio Jacobsen, 1905, in carved gold leaf frame.
This painting contains more vessels and shows more action than most yachting paintings in general and Jacobsens' in particular. At the center of the canvas is the yacht Dauntless bearing down with her bow facing the viewer and heeling on her port side. She is flying the New York Yacht Club burgee from the foremast and the burgee of her owner, Commodore James Gordon Bennett, Jr. from the rear mast and the American flag off of the gaff. Just behind her, sailing with a similar rig and in parallel, is either Sappho or Columbia racing for the honor of defending the America's Cup of 1871. This yacht is also flying the New York Yacht Club burgee. All four vessels on the left are flying the American flag. To the right of Dauntless are three more tugs and to their right three small vessels in the distance.
Note: The yacht Dauntless was built as a sloop in 1866 by Forsyth & Morgan in Mystic, Connecticut. She was built for Caldwell Colt and her home port was Newport. She was purchased in 1869 by James Gordon Bennett, Jr. who commissioned John B. Van Deusen to redesign her and change her rig from a sloop to a schooner. James Gordon Bennett, Jr. who had gained fame from winning the Great Ocean Race of 1866 with his yacht, Henrietta, became Commodore of the New York Yacht Club 1871, the year he challenged to defend the cup with Dauntless. He served between 1871-1874, a three year term instead of two. Dauntless was 123 feet in length, 26.7 feet in breadth and she drew 12.6 feet. Dauntless was not selected to defend the cup of 1871 and the honor went to Columbia.

1885 "SHERIDAN'S TROOPERS" BY DE.
1885 "SHERIDAN'S TROOPERS" BY DE. B. KEIMOffered in this lot is the 1885 "Sheridan's Troopers" by De. B. Keim, publisher David McKay, No. 23 South Ninth St. Philadelphia. "Sheridan's Troopers On The Borders: A Winter Campaign On The Plains" is a narrative of more than six months spent on the Southern Plains of the United States, observing the operations of the army directed by then Major Philip Henry Sheridan against the native peoples of various tribes. A very interesting account of several battles vs the Indians in the days of the old west. Keim writes as a man of his times, his descriptions of Indian ways is fascinating from a man who was there. Personal experiences of war against the Plains Indians With the conclusion of the Civil War the American nation turned once again to its 'Manifest Destiny' in earnest, and as the influence of the 'white man' became an ever greater burden upon the hitherto wild western frontier the inevitable escalation of antipathy and open warfare flared with the indigenous Indian tribes of the Great Plains. The 'Winter Campaign ' of 1868 saw the military men who had become household names during the war between the States-among them Sheridan and Custer-once more in the field to subjugate the Sioux, the Cheyenne and their allies. This campaign is reported here by one who took part in it-one of that resolute breed of nineteenth century journalists, the special correspondent. So the story of Forsyth's defense of Beecher's Island, The Battle of the Washita and other famous and notable fights are eloquently recounted within these pages together with the writers own personal experiences of camp, campaign and conflict. This is an excellent chronicle of the Plains Indian Wars and an essential addition to every library of the subject. De Benneville Randolph Keim (1841-1914) was a 19th-century journalist who became a war-time confidant of Ulysses S. Grant, the commanding general of the Union Army, during the American Civil War, and remained an advisor to Grant through his presidency. General of the Army Philip Henry Sheridan was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. This blue-green cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrations hardcover is in fair condition, the spine cloth is separating. Gold gilt is bright, edges exhibit scuffing. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout, measures 5"W x 7.75"L x 1.25"D

WILLIAM GAY YORKE (NEW
WILLIAM GAY YORKE (NEW YORK/CANADA/ENGLAND, 1817-C. 1888), DAUNTLESS AND MOHAWK RACING, OCTOBER 26, 1875., OIL ON CANVAS, 25.75" X 36". FRAMED.WILLIAM GAY YORKE, New York/Canada/England, 1817-c. 1888, Dauntless and Mohawk racing, October 26, 1875. Dimensions: Oil on canvas, 25.75" x 36". Framed. Provenance: Christie's, February 2004.Hyland Granby Antiques, Hyannisport, Massachusetts, purchased by the Kelton Foundation. The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts. In the fall of 1875 a series of match races were held for New York Yacht Club members. On October 26, Vice Commodore William T. Garner in his schooner Mohawk raced against ex-Commodore James Gordon Bennett in his schooner Dauntless. The course was 20 miles to windward to the Sandy Hook Lightship and return, and the prize was $1,000 per side, winner take all. In a strong sou'easter, Mohawk, a centerboard schooner, out-sailed Dauntless to windward but Dauntless caught and passed her downwind despite breaking a fore gaff. Mohawk failed to find the finish line in the fog that plagued the race.Dauntless was designed by J.B. van Deusen and was built in 1866 at Mystic, Connecticut by Forsyth & Morgan (later modified in 1870). She had principal dimensions of 120'-9" LOA, 24'-9" beam and 12' draft. The Mohawk was designed and built by J.B van Deusen in 1875 at Williamsburg, New York for Garner. She had principal dimensions of 140' LOA, 30' beam, and a 6' draft with the centerboard up.On July 20, 1876, Garner, a young man, had the misfortune to die aboard Mohawk when a sudden squall capsized her while at anchor with all of her sails set and made fast. He died trying to save his wife, who was trapped by sliding furniture. She also lost her life, as well as a number of other people on board. The sinking of this yacht was the subject of considerable discussion within the yachting community with regard to design and safety aboard these large schooners.
