AMISTAD TRIAL, NILES NATIONAL
AMISTAD TRIAL, NILES NATIONAL REGISTER, MARCH 1841 Niles National Register, March 20, 1841. A very important issue, as an inside page has: "The Case of the Amistad" being the report of the Supreme Court on this historic slavery-related event. The "Amistad" was a United States Supreme Court case resulting from the rebellion of slaves on board the Spanish schooner of this name in 1839. The rebellion broke out when the schooner, traveling along the coast of Cuba, was taken over by a group of captives who had earlier been kidnapped in Africa and sold into slavery. The Africans were later apprehended on the vessel near Long Island, New York, by the United States Navy and taken into custody. The ensuing widely publicized court cases in the United States helped the abolitionist movement. In 1840, a federal trial court found that the initial transport of the Africans across the Atlantic (which did not involve the Amistad) had been illegal, because the international slave trade had been abolished, and that they were thus not legally slaves but free. Furthermore, given they were illegally confined, the Africans were entitled to take what legal measures necessary to secure their freedom, including the use of force. The Supreme Court affirmed this finding on March 9, 1841, and the Africans traveled home in 1842. The case influenced numerous succeeding laws. This case was made famous by the 1997 movie "Amistad" by Stephen Spielberg. This issue has extensive reporting on this case taking over 1 1/2 pages, and as noted in the prefacing comments: "...Mr. Justice Story delivered the opinion of the court...", followed by a detailed review of the case from beginning to end, with the verdict of the court as noted above, in a Baltimore newspaper, close to Washington, D.C. where the verdict was given and since the verdict was rendered on March 9 this is likely one of the earliest reports to be found in a newspaper. 16pp.

He wished that this humane provision should be left to the wisdom and benevolence of government. It was improper to make it a fundamental in the Constitution. ?The motion was negative, and the amendment agreed to.? (p2/c4) [Proposed by Congress without last clause as fourth amendment; ratified as Second Amendment.] ?Eleventh amendment??The enumeration in this constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.? ?This was agreed to without amendment.? (p2/c4) [Proposed by Congress as eleventh amendment; ratified as Ninth Amendment.] ?Twelfth amendment??Art. 1, sec. 10, between the 1st and 2d part. Insert??No state shall infringe the equal rights of conscience, nor the freedom of speech, or of the press, nor of the right of trial by jury in criminal cases.? ?This amendment was accepted.? ROBERT DOWD (AMERICAN, 1936-1996)
ROBERT DOWD (AMERICAN, 1936-1996) "SAWBUCK" Acrylic on canvas. Signed 'Dowd' (lower right), titled 'Sawbuck', and dated ''65' (on reverse).
Robert Dowd (American, 1936-1996)
Robert Dowd was an American artist, who also painted under the name Robert O’Dowd. After his discharge from the US Marines in 1957, he entered the Society of Arts and Crafts/Center for Creative Studies, Detroit Michigan, where he studied painting. In 1958-59 he began drawing common objects, including ‘Stop’ signs. His work first appeared in an Art in America article on the “Young Artists Group” in Detroit. In 1960, he moved to San Francisco and began working on his first images of postage stamps. In 1961, he moved to Los Angeles and began work on his currency paintings. By 1962, he was getting attention for his groundbreaking paintings of common objects. Among the country, several other artists were experimenting with this new concept and in 1962 he was invited to show his work at the Pasadena Art Museum. The 1960s were a time of social unrest and the FBI and government thought anybody who was anti-establishment should be investigated and persecuted despite the right of freedom of expression. Unfortunately for Dowd, his fascination with painting currency caught the attention of the Secret Service. Painting currency in those days was considered counterfeiting, even if intended as a spoof. This certainly hurt his career, so he switched back to painting postage stamps but continued to paint currency in private.

FIORE DE HENRIQUEZ ABSTRACT
FIORE DE HENRIQUEZ ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST BRONZEFiore De Henriquez (1921 - 2004) (Mid to 20th Century.)The square base supports a globular pinnacle balancing an abstract composition of blade-like lobes, wings, on opposite sides of an abstracted opening or passageway. The sculpture in rich brown patina is signed Fiore in the casting, top of the base. Willem de Kooning produced similar bronze castings in this same period. The circumstances of her childhood, the difficulties of being born an intersexed person and the larger than life persona of sculptor Fiore de Henriquez have inspired more than a few books, articles and documentaries about her life and art. The titles include Art & Androgyny: The Life of Sculptor Fiore De Henriquez, Fiore In Love With Clay, Cigars Get Feminine Puff and All Woman and Half a Man to name a few. She eventually conquered and embraced the challenges of having been born with both male and female sexual characteristics, and ultimately considered it an opportunity, seeing herself as a rare and unusual individual. As a young woman in facist Italy, she helped evacuate Jewish refugees to safety and claims she escaped an interrogation through the washroom window after fixing her interrogators pancakes. She left Italy in 1949 and in 1953 became a British citizen. Fiore would return to work and exhibit in Rome and later lived in Tuscany until her passing. Throughout her life, and around the world, she received numerous commissions for public installations while she sculpted the likenesses of thousands of people, including celebrities and dignitaries as well as friends and relatives - some who describe her as having a cigar in one hand and whisky in the other during their sitting. It can be said that her abstract expressionist sculptures speak to the challenges she faced. Some seem to portray concealment while others can be seen as expressions of freedom (like the airy winged composition here). Some as themes of struggling with acceptance and others the release of not doing so. There are interpretations of solitude and loneliness or paired heads and conjoined figures, expressions of duality. In her essay on the artist's life, author Jan Short provides poignant insight including the artist's own words, ''The moment I embrace a piece of clay to make a sculpture, I think of how it's going to grow,'' Fiore said. ''Clay is very soft and pliable, so feminine: la creta. It then becomes plaster, more virile and rigid: gesso, that I can carve with a knife. Later it becomes feminine again as la cera, wax, pliable again, with fire this time. Then il bronzo, again masculine, hard. From feminine to masculine, over and again.'' The more one learns about the life and times of Fiore De Henriquez, the more fascinating her works become.Measures 15.5 x 21 x 9 inches and weighs 72 pounds.Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or wear.

He had a small craft store in Paris, in the third Arrondissement until 1940. Karner worked mainly on his own with apprentices. He specialized in carved wood and elegant home decoration. From bookends to cocktail picks, from desk accessories to decorative lamps, his creations were always refined and in limited edition. One morning in 1940, he never came to open his workshop. Karner was of Jewish origin and the story said he left Paris and crossed all France and the Pyrenees to flee from the German occupation of Paris. He never came back to France after World War II, but some pieces can be found on the market with his signature and the following mention, "Creaciones - Barcelona - Spain''. This could indicate, he was successful in his trip to Spain and freedom and was able to re-establish his activities in Barcelona."
