French School portrait, seated gentleman in wig, gray broadcloth deep-cuffed coat and matching waistcoat, holding a letter at a desk, unsigned, oil on canvas, 18th century, 33-7/8 x 26-1/4 in.; modern faux bois painted frame. Restretched on old stretcher, lined with glue, scattered retouch affecting less than 10 percent of surface primarily in background, abrasions (one through area of nose), uneven varnish, possible overcleaning in areas of background; frame with abrasions.
