FRENCH MODEL 1874 CUIRASSIER HELMET ON STAND French Cuirassier officer's model 1874 helmet, 19th century, having a steel skull, gilt brass comb with Medusa head, red and white hackle, cascading horsehair plume, acanthus patterned medallions and chin strap, and a frontal plate with additional laurels centering on a laming grenade, on later stand, apparently unmarked. Approx. helmet h. 13", w. 10.75", d. 7.25"; Overall on stand h. 25.5", w. 10.75", d. 7.25".

French Cent Garde Helmet Model 1865
French Cent Garde Helmet Model 1865 Silvered copper body with all trim and fixtures in fire-gilded metal. A crested comb with Medusa's head at front decorated with laurel and berries over rectangular designs on the sides and above the front. A bowl-like fitting ("marmouset") with leafed cylinder holding an upright tuft of white horse hair. Behind this tuft fixture a flowing white horse hair plume falls to the rear some 32". In a part to the hair a four-braid plait runs the length of the comb. The front plate in gilt decorated with the crown and initial monogram of Napoleon III and crossed sprays of laurel beneath. Rivets of brass decorate the "lobster tail" rear visor. Lion head bosses hold the officer-style chinscales of graduated laurel leaves backed with leather and fastened with a buckle. The feather vase-shaped plume socket forward of the left ear boss holds an original scarlet red vulture feather plume with officer's silver bullion "olive" at its base. The visors are both meant to be covered in leather; 40% of that leather remains.A one hundred-man mounted squadron (actually consisted of over 150 hand-picked guards) was formed in 1854 to escort the Emperor nephew of Napoleon the Great and disbanded in 1870. Condition: Very good. Liner missing.

FRENCH CAVALRY CHEST ARMOR & HELMET, 19TH C.(lot of 2) French Cuirassier or cavalry helmet and chest armor, 19th c., including: (1) steel helmet, with embellished brass comb, ending with a Medusa head above a flaming bomb, short plume at front, at one side a larger feathered plume, the comb back with a long horse hair tail, the lower helmet surrounded with black horse hair hide, chain metal chin straps lacking leather at one end, the interior retains the lower part of the leather liner with some loss, the visor and neck cover with brass edges, marked at upper back "1187 54 over 109C over L in an oval," overall (with plume, excluding tail): approx 17"h, 14.5"w, 7.25"d; (1) cuirass or front and back steel chest armor with brass rivets, believed to be, brass chain over leather shoulder straps, retaining one leather lower side strap joining the front and back plates, the lower interior etched with "Manfacturer de Kligenthal, Coulaux, model 1854, LT 1 L N150," the back plates similarly marked, the numbers 187 over 443 appear on the outer left side of both sections where they join, armor: approx 17"h, 14.5"w, 12.5"d, height on black steel stand with all parts: approx 41"h; 20.5lbs total with stand **Provenance: from a prominent Dallas, Texas estate**

BELGIAN WWI / WW2 INFANTRY HELMETBrodie/Doughboy type, possibly later in date of manufacture. The first designed by John Leopold Brodie in 1917, the underside with adjustable fittings, the side with a painted Belgium flag. The M1949 a post-war Belgian-made copy of the British Mark II helmet. The shell was identical to the British original, except that the liner fixing screw on the crown sat in an indentation. (Cond: surface abrasions, possibly repainted, copy)
