Albumen photograph identified in the negative as Chief Young Man Afraid of his Horses and his Teepee taken at Pine Ridge Agency S.D. Jan. 17th 1891 with backmark of Northwestern Photographic Co. Chadron Neb. which acquired the negatives from George Trager.Young Man Afraid of His Horses was a leading Oglala chief who supported the policies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. On January 7 1891 at the request of General Miles he visited the stronghold of the Ghost Dancers and persuaded many of the Oglalas to return to the agency. This temporarily diffused the situation and started a wave of defections which contributed to their final surrender of the dancers on January 15. Condition: Even toning to albumen; light soiling to print and mount.
