Note: An exceedingly rare, early "vernis mou" soft-ground etching and one of only several known proofs. Max Pechstein was an important German Expressionist painter and printmaker who in 1906 joined Die Brücke group of artists and in 1910 founded the Neue Sezession ("New Secession") which saw a more sombre palette and simpler compositions in his work, such as in the present work. Krüger 30. Provenance: Property from the Ismar Littmann Family Collection.
Condition:
Very good condition overall with very light toning from former matting and full margins. Hinged to backing board and matted. The Ismar Littmann Family Collection was originally amassed by famed German patron of the arts and attorney Ismar Littmann and then later by other family members. A friend to many of the artists he collected, Littmann did most of his acquiring of avant-garde art during the 15 years preceding the 1933 installation of the political regime, which forcibly removed and sold a large part of his collection that totaled over 6,000 works. Although Littmann died in 1934, part of the family was able to emigrate to the United States and Israel with a portion of the collection and a continued interest in European art of the early 20th century. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
