Inlaid Rosewood 8 Tune Swiss CylinderInlaid Rosewood 8 Tune Swiss Cylinder Music Box, also playing a bank of 4 bells and drums, lid and front inlaid with horn and flowers, original tune card in English, titles as follows: "Is It Likely?, Frisky Fiddler, Darling Nelly, Carry Me Back to Old Virginy, Maryland My Maryland, When This Cruel War is Over, The Famous Second Regiment, The Mikado". No teeth missing, winds and plays sluggishly, comb with surface oxidation, excellent case, 7 1/4" cylinder, case 18 1/2" w, 11 1/2" deep, 9 1/4" high. "When This Cruel War Is Over", also known under the title "Weeping, Sad and Lonely", is a song written by Charles Carroll Sawyer with music by Henry Tucker. Published in 1863, it was a popular war song during the American Civil War, sung by both Union and Confederate troops. Good read on Wikipedia!!

Fisher, dated April 23, 1861, "Look Out, Look Out, For War, For War", discusses the general atmosphere at school (probably Emory College) and in the towns of Oxford and Covington, Georgia, "I want to go with the boys and be among them when they touch the torches to the walls of the captured capitol, and shout the loud and long cheers to the flames as they consume its verry [sic] last remains", 12 x 7-3/4 in. Light toning, stains, creases, fading, minor tears and losses.
