Property from a Private Collector.Footnote: The Description de l Egypte remains as arguably the greatest achievement of Napoleons Expedition / Invasion into Egypt from 1798-1801 as well as the most ambitious scientific publication of the 19th Century. Publication began in 1803 but was not fully completed until 1830 with this the Second Edition. This monumental work paved the way to the modern field of Egyptology. From the onset Napoleons colonial intent in Egypt was to follow his (envisioned) swift military conquest, with the rapid implementation of economic and social policies so as to create a large swath of French controlled territory at the epicenter of all trade between East and West. With this grandiose plan in mind hundreds of French civilians were deployed with the invading troupes to Egypt led by a group of scientists known as the corps des savants from the Institut de France. Though poorly equipped to face the incredible odds and brutal hardships they would be up against these savants were some of the finest scientific minds of the time. The co-leaders were Gaspard Monge and Claude Louis Berthollet. Other prominent savants were Dominique Vivant Denon, Nicolas Conte, Rene-Nicolas Desgenettes, Joseph Fourier, E.T. Saint Hillaire, Jean Baptitste Jollois, Marie-Jules Cesar Lelorgne Savigny and Henri-Joseph Redoute among many others.

- 194. TULA SILVER DRESS CANE -CA. 1900
194. TULA SILVER DRESS CANE -CA. 1900 -SIZEABLE AND WEL...194. Tula Silver Dress Cane -Ca. 1900 -Sizeable and well-proportioned Tula silver crook handle decorated in the Art Nouveau taste with blooms within various framing elements, rosewood shaft and a horn ferrule. Notable is the ergonomically side wards inclined nose for the comfort of the wearer’s hand. The cane was used but still is in good condition spare for minor scratches totally in keeping with its age and use and does not in any way decrease its beauty or function. A full set of hallmarks authenticate it for silver and an Austrian origin. -H. 4” x 2 ¾”, O.L. 34 ½” -$200-$300 -Tula, also called Niello is an alloy made of silver, lead and copper adding a certain amount of sulphur. This mixture creates the typical grayish- black enamel like filling. Tula’s melting point (approximately 500 °C) is significantly below that of silver at 800 °C. In order to bring the Tula on to the silver, a pattern must be etched, engraved or cut out of the work piece leaving gaps. Using an open flame or oven, these gaps are then filled with the melted Tula. Obviously, because this process is very difficult and time consuming, this Caucasian specialty is today almost extinguished.

ROCK CRYSTAL DRESS CANE20th Century-Straight and tapering rock crystal handle with a fascinating natural frosted structure, plain silver collar with flowery engraved initials “GCM” besides a full set of Birmingham hallmarks, ebonizesd hardwood shaft and a metal ferrule. Canes with hard stone knobs and handles were costly to produce and reserved for noble and wealthy clients. Their enduring appeal makes these pieces perennial favorites and extremely collectable today. H. 2 ½” x 1”, O.L. 37 ½” Rock Crystal was once believed to be ice, which had been frozen so long that it could never melt and had turned into stone. This theory was accepted until 1676 when a scholar pointed out that roc crystal often occurs in the tropics. Rock crystal is natural crystalline quartz, which is usually colorless and transparent. Carved rock crystal was highly prized during the renaissance period. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was used for cameos, seals and high-end cane handles and was polished or faceted for jewelry.

- HARDSTONE FIGURAL BLACK BOY BRIGG CANE-1900
HARDSTONE FIGURAL BLACK BOY BRIGG CANE-1900 -Wheel cut of a rare black Nephrite jade to depict a lovely Black Boy head with a fez, the knob shows naturalistic details in exceptional finesse and takes advantage of a smooth and waxy surface in part glossy polished to accent its enigmatic fascination. -The Black Boy head comes with an 18 karat yellow gold collar marked “BRIGG” and a full set of London hallmarks with a square shaped “e” with cut corners for 1900 besides a “C.C” maker’s mark for Charles Cooke’s, (registered Jan 1888 and 1898, 1912) Fifth Street London until 1899; other London addresses subsequently, stick mount as specialty, Supplied stick mounts, etc. to Thomas Brigg & Sons. High grade flamed rosewood shaft of natural red-brown hues and a metal ferrule. -So-far, never seen in such high quality, this cane is charm pure. The signature Brigg, one of the ever-best cane retailers, adds to its desirability. It could either be a decorative item inspired by the numerous Black Boy brands advertisements of its period or a subtle refer to the man in the fez as a symbol of worldliness and solidarity in the post-Civil War South and Black Shriners of a Medina lodge. Black families who wanted to buy a home or open a business in the early 1900s could rarely rely on Jim Crow-era bank loans. -They could instead turn to mutual aid societies, groups like New Orleans’ famous “Krewes.” -H. 1 ¾” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 37 ¾” -$2,500-$3,000 -The term Fez is Moroccan in origin from the town of Fes. The hat itself is either of Moroccan or Turkish origin. It was popular especially during the later period of the Ottoman Empire and its use spread throughout the empire. The Fez also called Tarboosh is a felt headdress in the shape of a short cylindrical peakless hat, usually red, and sometimes with a black tassel attached to the top. -Brigg Umbrella Co. was established in London in 1836, later changing its name to Brigg & Son and becoming the leading cane retailer of his generation, possibly the greatest of all times. -The firm’s main branches were in London 23, St. James’s street and Paris 33, Avenue de l’Opéra. According to their catalog at the turn of the 20th century, they also had agencies in Nice, Madrid, Naples and Rome. -For those in the know, Brigg became synonymous with gentleman luxury items and canes in particular. -Its unique position in cane history and European culture owed much to the historical luminaries who wore Brigg canes, including, among Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, Churchill as well as the famous writers who mentioned Brigg in their works, like Pushkin, Balzac and Victor Hugo. It is said that Brigg holds a special place in our cultural heritage because its founder set the standards by which all fine cane making has since been judged.
- TORTOISESHELL AND BONE DAY CANE-London
TORTOISESHELL AND BONE DAY CANE-London 1907 -Solid tortoiseshell handle fashioned in a stretched, flattened and tapering configuration and embellished by an adorable bone bird with the head on one side and twin tail on the other. While the tortoiseshell part is plain and shows the entire range of colors and warm hues of the noble material from the sea, the bone plumed bird distinguishes by its delicate engraving and a long, dawn falling twin tail. Brimming with seductive powers, the handle comes on an ebony shaft and horn ferrule and with a wide and plain silver collar with clear manufacturer marks “SWAINE” and “SWAINE & ADENEY LONDON” and a full set of London hallmarks 1907 beside an “ESA” makers mark for “Swaine & Adeny Ltd (Edward Swaine Adeney)”. -H. 9 ¼” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 40 ½” -$800-$1,200 Tortoiseshell is an ornamental material obtained from the curved, horny shields forming the shell of the Hawksbill or of the Caretta turtle. The marbled, variegated pattern and deep translucence of the plates have been used in veneering and in the manufacture of jewelry and other items since ancient times. Tortoiseshell was imported to Rome from Egypt and has found many uses through the centuries from the time it was first introduced to Europe by the East India Company in the 17th century. Tortoiseshell work was raised to the level of artistry with design applications such as veneer over wood with ivory and ebony trimmings, marquetry, lacquered versions and inlays with gilded flowers, gold or silver. It became popular in the East as well as in Europe, where it was used as a material for jewel cases, trays, snuffboxes, canes and other decorative articles.
- SILVER AND LAPIS LAZULI BRIGG DRESS
SILVER AND LAPIS LAZULI BRIGG DRESS CANE-1888 -Large Lapis Lazuli knob fashioned of a select single stone of a throughout uniform blue color richly speckled with golden pyrite dust in a substantial, slightly tapering and paneled vertical configuration extending on one side with a domed and matching facetted top and, on the other, with plain and narrowing neck. -Pleasing to the eye and with an addictive, sensuous feel to the hand, the knob extends in a longer and plain collar with a classy presentation engraving on one side “A.G. \ from \ H. & D.G. \ 1888” and a full set of English silver hallmarks 1887 on the other. To the right of the hallmarks there is a “BRIGG” stamp and a “WM”, most likely for Walter Morissey. The collar extends seamless in a high-end rosewood shaft distinguished by a superb veined structure underscored by striking, reddish brown hues and a dark horn ferrule. -This cane has style and substance and demonstrates sophisticated cane art at its best. With a unique blend of English heritage and timeless European style, it is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. -This cane is a reminder of how European trading and imperial expansion provided supplies of new materials, which were made up into fashionable commodities in European workshops. Each component of the cane, the Lapis Lazuli, the silver, the rosewood and horn probably came from a different part of the world, from territories colonized by different European powers. -It survived in superb condition and with its entire initial sparkle. -H. with collar 3 ½” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 36 ¾” -$600-$800 -Brigg Umbrella Co. was established in London in 1836, later changing its name to Brigg & Son and becoming the leading cane maker of his generation, possibly the greatest cane manufacturer and retailer of all times. The firm’s main branches were in London 23, St. James’s street and Paris 33, Avenue de l’Opéra. According to their catalog at the turn of the 20th century, they also had agencies in Nice, Madrid, Naples and Rome. It is said that Brigg holds a special place in our cultural heritage because its founder set the standards by which all fine cane making has since been judged. -The term “walking stick” is based upon function, but the origin of “cane” is less clear. The leading theory attributes the term to the 1500s, when walking sticks were first made of imported bamboo or malacca, members of the cane family. Still further conjecture is that “cane” dates to ancient Rome and the Latin canes, for dog, when pedestrians often carried walking sticks to defend themselves from roaming packs of canines.
