[Mardi Gras] a group of photographs of the Mystic Club Ball three of the 1938 ball "Queen Victoria's Masque in Windsor Castle" with Mrs. Charles C. Crawford (Cornelia Smith) as queen; and two of the 1946 ball "A Time for Rejoicing" with Charles C. Crawford as king and Mrs. Darwin S. Fenner (Flora Hardie) as queen. The Ball programme read in part: "In this year of our Lord 1946 the one hundred and seventieth year of independence of the United States independence which was so dearly won and which so recently has been maintained only by force of arms a spirit of rejoicing in present freedoms seems more fitting than a hearkening back to events and persons of bygone centuries. In such a spirit the Mystic King omits his traditional pageantry from the past but as on former happy occasions he honors his Queen and her noble retinue and invites his guests to join with him in celebrating once again the joys of the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday"; together with a Mystic Club Ball invitation March 2 1935 printed by Shirokiya Tokyo Japan. Provenance: Estate of Charles C. Crawford 1315 First Street New Orleans 1978.
