Cole of LA authenticating the painting in 1905, exhibited at the Edward Dean Museum Old Masters Exhibition, Oct 30, 2011 to June 9, 2012. In vintage gilt gesso frame, OS: 11" x 13", SS: 6 1/2" x 8 1/2". Fine craquelure, stretcher impression. One of the most important British painters of the 18th c., known for his sensitive portraits and landscapes rendered in pleasant palette with a light touch. Vying with Reynolds to become the society favorite, Gainsborough ended up traveling in elite circles, composed of the wealthy who commemorated their families and estates with equal fervor.
