SILVER CALUMET & HECLA MINING MEDAL
SILVER CALUMET & HECLA MINING MEDAL 1918 This silver medal has on the reverse "July 1918/Calumet and Hecla/Mining Company/In Recognition of / Faithful and Efficient/ Service / For A Period of 30 Years / To / Berger Berner. Interesting history of the mine, copper being discovered in Michigan in1864 and by 1868 through 1886 it was the leading copper producing mine in the US and in the world from 1871-1880 - paying out $72 million in dividends in the 19th century. It built the first industrial hospital in the US in 1868. Its mines reached a depth of 4,900 feet and operated for over 100 years, finally shutting down in 1970. The man on the right of the medal appears to be Alexander Aggassiz, one of the first people to run the mine. Silver sheen and classic silver ring tone. Heavier, at 97.9 grams, than the bronze version sold last month but this one was for 30 years service. Brenners signature on the shoulder of Mr. Aggassiz on the right edge
