FRANÇOIS GALL (HUNGARIAN/FRENCH
FRANÇOIS GALL (HUNGARIAN/FRENCH 1912-1987) A PAINTING, ...FRANÇOIS GALL (Hungarian/French 1912-1987) A PAINTING, "La Table Rose," MID 20TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, signed L/R, "F. GALL," verso in paint on canvas, "F GALL LA TABLE ROSE;" 19 1/2" x 24", framed 29 1/2" x 33 1/2". Note: The happiest of pink tablecloths anchors this carefree still life. Just beyond the wave of the pink tablecloth is an impressionist landscape; a white footed compote centers the painting with pears, citrus and fruits. A blue and white pitcher holds a bouquet of fresh daisies and daffodils painted with both detail and abstraction. A pair of wine-purple grapes ethereally glisten in the foreground. The space, is cropped and tumbles toward the viewer at a slant, and is framed by the simple white painted table. Cool blues applied with painterly brushstrokes appear in both a denim blue and sky blue, effortlessly filling the quiet spaces in the background. An unusual still life for Francois Gall, this painting has a museum quality and expressly French presence.
Condition:
Craquelure throughout, an area of paint bubbling with flaking at right center, expected surface wear. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. We are grateful to Marie-Lize Gall of Comité François Gall for providing her opinion of authenticity and her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
LOT NOTES
The present painting belongs to a series of paintings made by Gall depicting women — often his daughters or wife Eugénie, as here, seated before mirrors. A comparable work, entitled La coiffeuse au bouquet , is illustrated in Robert Vrinat, François Gall (Collection de l'Actualité Artistique Internationale, 1953). This painting cycle was exhibited at Galerie Durand Ruel in Paris (1949), and later in Stockholm and New York (1953), Gall's first show in the United States. Pictured on the cover of that first American exhibition and behind François and Eugénie in a photograph of the couple at the show are other works from the series (please refer to the additional images for reference).
CONDITION
Observed in frame, the work is in overall excellent original condition. Beyond overall surface dirt, no significant issues to report. Inspection under UV light shows an even layer of varnish; no apparent signs of restoration.
N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. Shapiro Auctions, LLC., including its consultants and agents, shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
