- EUGENE HENRI CAUCHOIS (FRENCH, 1850-1911)
EUGENE HENRI CAUCHOIS (FRENCH, 1850-1911) "LATE SUMMER REPAS" Oil on canvas. Signed 'H. Cauchois Aout 1874' (lower left).
Catalogue Note: The Flemish idiom of flower painting during the first decades of the 19th century combined meticulous draftsmanship enhanced by life-like colors. This style never quite lost its appeal as
the 19th century progressed, especially in France, but by the mid-19th century, one can see the emergence of a new variety of flower painters liberated from the realistic botanical approach of their traditional forerunners. Albeit a brief period, French flower painting reached a pinnacle of excellence before the Impressionists' emphasis on decomposition of light or the ruthlessly synthetic approach of many of the other movements such as the Nabis at the turn of the century overwhelmed the market.
As the century progressed, particularly the French School favored a more casual placement of an artful entanglement of garden flowers along a ledge or on the ground. This required great skill to execute and was extremely popular in the 1860's. For the first time in memory, flowers in a more natural setting did not carry the heavy burden of specific botanical or allegorical associations and esoteric language that had been de rigeur previous centuries. In addition, the gradual loosening up of the brushwork gave the finished work a more lifelike feeling.

- HARDSTONE AND ENAMEL THEATER CANE-Ca.
HARDSTONE AND ENAMEL THEATER CANE-Ca. 1900 -Topaz knob of a natural smoky fawn color fashioned in the shape of a rosebud and sensitively wheel cut with layered and overlapping petals. A smooth and frosted surface lends the bud a lovely naturalistic effect while the polished curling edges breathe life into it. -The knob is tastefully presented on a high-grade silver and enamel collar and comes with a first rate and well figured snake wood shaft and matching horn ferrule, both licenses for ultimate luxury. The collar itself is characterized by two slender and matching beaded ring edges framing a wider engine turned, iridescent white enameled band highlighted by an underglaze 24 karat micro laurel leaf encircling crown. -This high-end eminently displayable and classy cane is a gracious link to a romantic past when fine manners requested from the gentleman to wear a stick with rose for an elegant evening visit to the theater or opera, hence the name Theater Cane. -The absence of hallmarks makes ease exact origin identification for this cane difficult and can be explained with the thought that the cane was intended for export. However, subtle stylistic hints speak for a Viennese origin. -This superb example of an exceedingly rare type of canes is endowed with the star power and magic of traditional Objects of Virtue. It distinguishes with a successful process of reduction, which epitomizes the “Neat” style of the Viennese lapidary artist whose simplicity belies the exceptional quality of materials and construction. -H. 1 ¾” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 38 ½” -$3,000-$4,000 -Beloved by many, roses are favorite garden flowers, and the characteristics of the rose flower, including its shape and cherished scent, make it easily recognizable. Roses have been cultivated for millennia and have a vibrant history that dates back thousands of years. Although they are predominately thought of as a token of love, roses come in a wide variety of types and colors, and can mean many things. -A single red rose is the classic token of love, but other types of roses have their own way of professing different emotions. Pink roses, for example, can signify happiness or a desire to be believed. A white rose can symbolize innocence or purity, and a yellow rose can signify a loss of love. A red rosebud can signify purity, and a white rosebud can symbolize girlhood. By contrast, a bouquet of mature blooms can represent deep gratitude. -In the early 20th century, the phrase “sub-rosa,” meaning “under the rose,” came into popularity. It was used to indicate secrecy or privacy due to the ancient tradition of using a rose during a meeting to symbolize the confidence of the participants.
- DON BALKE (B. 1933) "TIGER SWALLOWTAIL"Don
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "TIGER SWALLOWTAIL"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Tiger Swallowtail" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Tiger Swallowtail/Michigan stamp issued June 13, 1987.
Probably no other butterfly is as familiar in North America as the yellow and black Tiger Swallowtail. Although primarily a resident of woodlands and prairies its preference for garden flowers often brings it into towns and even large cities. The various Tiger Swallowtail species are well distributed throughout the country. In the north it is small and pastel-colored with a brown base, while the Tiger Swallowtails of the deep south are larger and much more vibrant in color with a black base. Belying their delicate beauty, Tiger Swallowtails are strong flyers and can be frequently found visiting mud puddles and brackish waters. They are also apparently attracted to tobacco smoke. A wide variety of ornamental trees such as the wild cherry, birch, poplar, ash, and basswood, provide food for the hungry orange and black striped green larva. While in its pupal stage, the Tiger Swallowtail carefully constructs a one leaf nest by folding the leaf's edges. Then it emerges as a colorful adult once again ready to flutter over the fields and woods.
