DANIEL GARDNER (british 1750-1805)
DANIEL GARDNER (british 1750-1805) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Gouache, pastel and crayon, oval 9 5/8 x 7 7/8 in. provenance: Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd., London, United Kingdom. From the collection of Philip Rieff and Alison Douglas Knox, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Examining work out of frame, we note verso is card. The card is securely affixed to the mat, which has an oval opening, as seen in catalogue/online illustration. Verso of card inscribed in pencil: "No. 22". along with additional (presumably framer''s?) notes. Card measures: 13 /14 x 11 in. Work appears to be in generally very good original condition. As visible in catalogue/online illustration, there are darker passages in background, to left of figure''s head/upper torso, and to right of left shoulder. These are presumably intended.
