Condition:
Very good condition overall with two spots of staining on outer edge of lower left corner of sheet. Matted.The Ismar Littmann Family Collection was originally amassed by famed German patron of the arts and attorney Ismar Littmann and then later by other family members. A friend to many of the artists he collected, Littmann did most of his acquiring of avant-garde art during the 15 years preceding the 1933 installation of the political regime, which forcibly removed and sold a large part of his collection that totaled over 6,000 works. Although Littmann died in 1934, part of the family was able to emigrate to the United States and Israel with a portion of the collection and a continued interest in European art of the early 20th century. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted piece on board construction that shows three chief's congregating with a piece pipe and their ceremonial drums all wrapped in traditional garments onf trade blankets and decorated garments. The artist signature in the artwork is shown in the bottom left hand corner and is marked in the top left hand corner as follows: Talio Crome Reproduction by Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, U.S.A. Artist Winold Reiss was born on September 16, 1886, in Karlsruhe, Germany. A gifted portraitist, Reiss challenged the convention of racial stereotyping by portraying African American, Native American, and Asian American subjects as dignified individuals. The condition of this pastel print on board is well preserved with some taped up rips to the back of the artwork but otherwise shows no obvious signs of damage and shows good lines to the artwork with fantastic coloration of the artwork. The measurements of this framed artwork is 22 5/8" x 14 1/4" and the visible artwork measures 19 1/8" x 10 7/8".
