GERRIT DOU (NETHERLANDS, 1613-1675) The Fish Monger, one of Dou's 'niche' trade paintings, this example of a woman being attended by a wealthy man while seated among her dried marine wares. The man is amusing himself by dropping an apple slice she has just cut for him into her bodice, her response is one of tacit disapproval, her lips pursed while staring at him blankly. All is being closely observed by a servant girl to the left and behind. Oil on walnut panel, signed lower right "GDou" and dated 1640. Housed in a late 19th c. gilt gesso ranked deep cove frame. OS: 25" x 20 1/2", SS: 18" x 13 1/2". Early label in dutch verso, along with exhibition number label.
