ALLEN GINSBERG "UNTITLED #3" (1998 LITHO/ SERIGRAPH)Allen Ginsberg (after)
(American, 1926-1997)
Untitled #3 (AH) , 1998
Color lithograph and serigraph on paper
30 1/4" x 23 1/4"
Estate-signed, pencil-numbered (11/ 36) to the bottom margin, alongside a Gemini G.E.L. chop mark. The glazed frame measures 36 1/2" x 29 1/2" x 1 1/4".
In the year preceding his death, Ginsberg worked with Gemini G.E.L. to produce six limited edition images; these print runs were executed and published posthumously. "Untitled #3" includes two instances of Ginsberg's "AH" mantra (reversed in the print, in the sun at the top left and the sunflower at the bottom right), inspired by William Blake's poem "Ah! Sun-flower," the subject of a formative hallucination experienced by Ginsberg in 1948.
Condition
The sheet is in very good condition, though it has come unfastened from the mat tape and is loose within the frame. The frame is chipped along the bottom and at the top left corner.

He later moved to Washington, DC and worked at NASA Headquarters. His first solo exhibition was in New York in 1999. His painting, Deep Third was acquired by the Guggenheim Museum in 2007 and some of his "LICK" drawings are in MoMA's collection. According to the artist's website: "With meticulous care, he paints fields of overlapping silhouettes: flat, seemingly translucent shadows of animals, human figures, cartoon characters, cars and trucks, plants and bugs. Where these shapes overlap, colors mix and you have the kaleidoscopic illusion of disembodied transparencies layered in an indeterminately shifty and luminous space."
